100 Years Ago (1908)

Stanley Sunbeams – A tax of two and one-half percent is to be levied, this year, on the taxable property of the city.
 
A premature discharge of dynamite which he was using on a stump, badly injured Felix Schukala of the Town of Withee, about the face on Thursday last.
 
Dennis and Peter Tormey are new employees at the heading factory here having arrived last week.  Walter Deuermeyer has also returned.  All are experts in the heading business.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
The fine farm residence of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rogalski, located about five miles southeast of the village, burned to the ground on Friday last while the family were attending church.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – At the soli auction, cows brought an average price of $22.69.  The highest cow brought $41.00 and lowest $8.60.  One horse brought $100 and one $50.  Hay sold for $11.50 per ton.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Seleski have remodeled the Nightingale Tavern, north of Thorp on Highway 64.
 
Cypryan and Anna Kosieracki were married September 7, 1908, in St. Hedwig’s Church in Thorp.  Sunday, September 7, 1958 they observed their 50th wedding anniversary repeating their marriage vows at a solemn High Mass.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
Thorp High School has a new exchange student from Mexico.  Her name is Maria del Socorro Alatorre Canto, but her friends call her Coqui.  She is staying with the Clarence Turenne family, Thorp.
 
The Thorp Queen of Peace Council of the Knights of Columbus celebrated their Silver Anniversary Sunday night, Oct. 9, at the Quonset hall, commemorating 25 years of “Unity, Charity, Fraternity and Patriotism.”
 
On Friday, October 28, 1983, the Thorp Courier will proudly be hosting a celebration in honor of our 100th year of publications.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
The process of designing a future interchange to be constructed at Wisconsin Highway 29 and Clark County Highway E near Curtiss has begun, according to Don Gutkowski, director of the WI Dept. of Transportation’s District.
 
Several area youths were winners in the annual Clark County Conservation & Environmental Awareness Poster Contest held Tuesday evening, October 6th at Greenwood High School.  Cortney Olejniczak of Thorp won first place in the elementary division.  Beth Wirtala, also of Thorp, won first place in the junior division.  Kellie Luzinski of Thorp placed second in the junior division and Ashley LaVick placed third.  In the senior division was Jessica Deuel placing first, Janelle Palmer with second, and Jamie Smith with third, all from Thorp.
