100 Years Ago (1908)

Polley Notes – Fred Krueger, Central section foreman at Moorehouse, found the hand-car between Moorehouse and Gilman, which the burglars used to rob the bank at Holcombe. – An unknown polish man working in J. S. Owen’s camp froze to death on his way to camp on Sunday night.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – M. P. Walker has resigned the management of the Hotel Maine preparatory to moving to Chippewa Falls where he will be installed into the office of sheriff of the county on Jan. 1st.
 
75 Years Ago (1933)
 
A committee of Thorp businessmen, Adam Lesniewski, John A. Papierniak and H. t. Jalling, got functioning last week and with the help of various clubs, merchants and societies are busy decorating the streets of the village with Christmas trees, wreaths, and evergreens.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – The South Worden School is still one of the larger ones in Clark County.  T he enrollment there this year is 48.
 
Breezy Hill Cheese Factory Neighborhood – Several men from this vicinity are working under the C.W.A. and twelve teams are hauling gravel from the Alger gravel pit, graveling the road south of Bratz Corner.
 
50 Years Ago (1958)
 
Frank M. Broeren, 66, prominent Thorp resident died at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire on December 15, 1958, following an illness of several months.  Mr. Broeren served as village president for eighteen years, was elected its first mayor in April 1948 when Thorp became a city, and held that office for four years.
 
25 Years Ago (1983)
 
1983 was another successful year for the Clark County Fair.  Income, however, didn’t meet expenses and crowded conditions continued to be a problem as expanded facilities were fill with larger numbers of fair exhibits.
 
Kandi Syryczuk thwarted Neillsville’s futile efforts to contain her scoring explosion as she set a Cardinal record for points scored in a game with 36.  The old mark of 30 was set in 1977 by Nancy Nolechek.
 
10 Years Ago (1998)
 
Leon Pawlak and Myrtle Babbitt look forward to taking it easy after years of faithfully serving Thorpites.  A dependable tradition, they will be greatly missed by their loyal customers.  The Dairy Bar has been the center of downtown activity for over 42 years, but will close its doors for business December 31.
 
Barb Horton, owner of Affordable Curtains in Thorp, was busy keeping shop when a man walked through her door recently.  She was taken completely by surprise to learn that he was a representative of McCall Patterns and had come all the way from New York to see her.
