100 Years Ago (1909)

Thirty below zero yesterday morning.
 
Jas. Connor has been reappointed Deputy Sheriff by Sheriff Rob’t Eunson.
 
Herman Friess’ farm northwest of town has been connected with the local telephone system; also the farm home of Ole Moe, Town of Worden.
 
Wm Barrett began hauling logs from the Town of Mead last week, which he cut last winter and failed to get in on account of the scarcity of snow.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Clark County’s CWA payroll for the past week reached the total of $45,927.69.  The payroll will be shared by 2,428 men and exceeded last week’s payroll by more than $5,000.
 
The large skating rink recently completed by the Thorp Lions Club on the south side of the village has been the scene of much hilarity and amusement to youngsters during the holidays.
 
Greenwood – A CWA project calling for the fixing of the dam and otherwise improving and beautifying the Greenwood Tourist Park at a cost of approximately $10,000, was approved.  The project will employ about fifty men and will start soon.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
It’s hard to believe but the day of passenger train service for Thorp and some other towns between St. Paul and Chicago served exclusively by the Soo Line will be over next Tuesday.
 
The Thorp Finance Corporation, Thorp, WI has applied to the Small Business Administration for a license to form the Thorp Small Business Investment Corp., according to Francis J. Conway, Thorp President.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp Volunteer Fire Department answered two calls over the Christmas weekend, one a fire inside a wall, which caused some damage, and the other, a chimney fire causing no damage.  The department went to the Ray Jaskot home at approx. 11:40 a.m. Sat. Dec. 24.  The fire department answered a call to the Henry Klopatowski residence on Friday, Dec. 30.
 
Students statewide will work closely with local attorneys in the next several months preparing for Wisconsin’s First Annual High School Mock Trial Competition.  Local lawyers volunteering to coach students in the competition include Charles S. Senn, Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Northwestern Bank will host the first Celebration of Ability Art Show sponsored by the Indianhead Area Special Olympics.  The show begins on Monday, Jan. 11 and runs until Monday, Jan. 25 when it will move on to Bloomer.
