100 Years Ago (1909)

Gilman Newslets – A meeting of the Catholics of this place was held on Saturday evening last for the purpose of raising funds for a new church to be built here in the spring.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – The local statistic report shows that Stanley during the past year had 25 marriages, 96 births, and 22 deaths.
 
A number of cases of diphtheria, scarlet fever and small pox are reported hereabouts.
 
The two new mail routes, which were expected to be put in operation about Jan. 1st, are still questions for the future.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
The Peoples Exchange Bank here is now operating under the new federal deposit insurance act.  A telegram was received last week from Walter J. Cummings, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, stating that the bank’s application to come under the provisions of the act had been approved.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
A fire late Friday afternoon destroyed the Bill Hickman home six miles south and two miles east of Thorp.
 
Clark County Coroner Robert Lulloff said Monday that the death of two Chili area bachelor brothers was definitely caused by asphyxiation.  The bodies of Frank and Joseph Karl, both about 60, were found in their two-room farm home Saturday morning by their milk hauler, Willard Geldernick.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Herbert J. Grover has notified the Thorp Public Schools that it will receive $4,259 to fund a vocational guidance project.
 
The president of the Thorp Volunteer Fire Department, Dave Shewczyk, presented Mayor Dave Keating with a check for $500 to go towards the purchase of the new fire truck on Monday, January 9, at the regular meeting of the Thorp City Council.

Thorp Business Association honored three outstanding business owners at their regular meeting in December at Leon and Lil’s.  Ted and Rosalie Meyer, owners of Thorp Electric and members of the TBA for 50 years, were honored for their outstanding contribution to the Thorp business community.  Hank and Collene Nowobielski, owners for 40 years of Hank’s Furniture, were chosen for their role in the development of the City of Thorp.  Leon and Lil Kaczmarek, owners of Leon and Lil’s for over 50 years, were singled out for their long-standing support of the growth and development of Thorp.
