100 Years Ago (1909)

Gilman Newslets – Chas. Card of Chippewa Falls came up on Thursday and is now employed as matcher in the heading mill.
 
A warm spell of weather and rains last week resulted in the loss of all the snow and poor wheeling, and hauling of all kinds is at a standstill.
 
Unity experienced a $30,000 fire on Friday morning last several business places going up in smoke, among them being the Unity Register printing plant.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Wm. Wagner, Sr., who has been ill for the past three months, made his first appearance in that length of time, at the print shop on Monday last.
 
The Owen Enterprise began its twenty-eighth year last week with Mr. V. P. Barager at the helm.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – Repairs on the Roger Creek school house and grounds are completed and school is again in session.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Area persons interested in the relocation of Highway 29 jammed the Thorp Legion Hall full Thursday evening to obtain information on farmers and land owners rights and claims.
 
At the annual meeting of the Lynn Insurance Company held at Neillsville Tuesday afternoon, W. A. Wilhelm of Thorp was re-elected as president.
 
On Sunday, Jan. 25 there were approximately 1,400 people at the Winter Sports Area.  The biggest crowd present so far this year.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
Testing began on the Ray Baldeschwiler property last week by Cooper Engineering for the City of Thorp’s proposed wastewater treatment plant expansion.  The city hopes to build on the property, providing the testing allows it.
 
January 18 was a special day at Thorp Elementary School.  Every student had the opportunity to work with David Parker, a professional musician and ventriloquist from Marshfield, WI.
 
The Thorp Courier changed our format from six columns to four columns, thus, enlarging the column size.  It makes for easier readability and gives the paper a fresh, new look.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
The name Iditarod conjures up images of far away Alaska, brutal cold and mythic mushers emitting imperative cries to dogs possessed of super strength and heart.  It is a sport that is remote and mysterious to most of us.  Few are aware that world class dog sled competitors call north central Wisconsin home.  In fact, the 1998 world’s number one dog sled racer in the junior division and winner of the gold medal is Richie DeBauche, age 11, of Thorp.  His sister, Sara Beth, age 13, won the bronze medal and is third in the world in the junior division.
