100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – The Quaker Doctor’s show continues to entertain large audiences every night at the opera house.
 
Polley Notes – John Hatfield is busy again drilling wells. – Interest is being aroused in the establishment of a public library here.  How do you feel about it?
 
Gilman Newslets – There has been a brass band organized here with Philip Justman as tutor.
 
The Ladies’ Union Club celebrated their tenth anniversary on Thursday evening last by a colonial dinner to its members and their husbands at the H. E. Howard home.
 
New settlers are beginning to arrive.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Wisconsin is planning to celebrate its 300th birthday this year.
 
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Frost of Chippewa Falls are opening a “Ladies’ Ready-to-Wear” Shop in the building just north of the Soo Hotel and announce their opening Saturday, March 24.
 
Google Eye News – Theo. Woldt, cheesemaker at Wild Cherry Factory announced that cheese will be made every day now beginning March 21 at his factory.  Price paid for cheese at Wild Cherry for the last two weeks ending March 15 was 31˘.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Ray Gripentrog, Thorp High School coach for the past five years, will take over the athletic duties at McDonell High School in Chippewa Falls according to Father Louis Dietrich of Notre Dame Parish.
 
Fifteen persons interested in organizing a Thorp Sportsmen Rod and Gun Club held a meeting at Chet’s Club 73 Tuesday evening.
 
While Thorp has been promised a new post office building on several occasions in the past the proposition has never gone this far and it is highly possible that the building may materialize this time.  The present post office building was erected for the post office in 1929 by Anton and John Papierniak whose lease expires on the property this coming June.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp FBLA Chapter is proud to announce that Mr. Edward J. Bieno, of the Peoples Exchange Bank in Thorp, has been named FBLA Business person of the Year – 1984.
 
Thorp standout Kandi Syryczuk added to her personal post-season honors by being the top vote-getter on the first-ever Channel 7 Basketball Girls All Star Team for small schools.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Bishop Raymond Burke, Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse visited the Thorp Deanery from Sunday, February 28th until Wednesday, March 3rd.
 
Thorp High School junior and Lady Cardinal Basketball player, Kelly Schauer, was named a 1998-99 Cloverbelt All Conference player.  Alex Polnaszek was named 1998-99 Cloverbelt Conference Honorable mention.  Thorp High School seniors and Lady Cardinal Basketball players, Sherri Haas and Jenny Bergman were named 1998-99 Cloverbelt Conference Honorable mention.
