100 Years Ago (1909)

Gilman Newslets – Chas. Barber has moved to our city.  The stave department of the Gilman Mfg. Co.’s plant is to begin operations this week.
 
The law creating the new Town of Taft has passed the legislature and has been officially published.  Town 30, 4 west, will be known as Taft, and Town 30, 3 west, as Roosevelt.
 
Merchant L. Phillips went to Chicago on Sunday last where he will purchase new lines of goods for his store.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
A blizzard on Saturday and Easter Sunday covered the ground with about 16 inches of snow and tied up traffic on the side roads for half a day.
 
The new Deluxe Plymouth for 1934 is now on display at Tobola’s Garage.  A bigger, roomier car with 114 inches wheelbase, the Plymouth offers the best buy in its price class and many above it.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
The opening sale of the 1959 season – the 22nd year – will start today, Thursday, April 2nd at Mattes Livestock Market, three miles south, two miles east of Thorp.
 
Lillian Kowieski, 17-year-old, Thorp High School senior, has been named a zone winner in the Annual Thorp Finance Foundation essay competition, according to Emil Pratt, Thorp office manager.
 
Captain Robert T. Frazee has announced that Stanley’s Battery A 3rd Howitzer Bn, 173rd Combat Regiment of the Wisconsin National Guard will attend annual summer encampment for training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin from June 13th to 27th.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp High School Faculty has chosen Joel Anderson to represent Thorp High School in quest of one of ten $1500 statewide scholarships given by the Wisconsin State Telephone Foundation.
 
A power failure was experienced by several Thorp residents residing west of Washington Street, March 26, due to a tree limb falling on a primary wire and a neutral wire.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Every year the Thorp Jaycees sponsor the Beautiful Baby Contest.  This year, Andrew Stalheim, son of David and Julie Stalheim of Thorp won 1st place.  Alyssa Rycerz, daughter of Judy and Ron Rycerz of Thorp, took 2nd place this year.  “Maggie” won the Beautiful Pet Contest.  She is owned by Pam Mertens.
 
Dorothy Lesneski celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday, March 26th. She is a resident at Oakbrook Health and Rehab in Thorp.
