100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – The dwelling house of Thomas Lee, near Brown’s Lake, was totally destroyed by fire on Oct. 27th. His barn and outbuildings were saved.
 
Butlerville – Wm. Butler’s horse barn was struck by lightning on Sunday night last and destroyed.  His team was rescued so the loss was less than $100.
 
Heiser & Burkhardt are engaged in cutting fifty cords of hard maple into cant hook stock for Louis Turenne, at his farm in the Town of Worden.
 
A new local orchestra has been formed for the purpose of furnishing music for dances and other occasions.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
The Thaddeus Kosciusko Society, Local Group No. 646, of the Polish National Alliance, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the local group here.
 
Clark County, long a supporter of Progressive candidates, swung into the third party column in yesterday’s election and elected three new Progressive officers as well as supporting the state ticket of that party.
 
Lon Drangel of Gilman and B. F. Riplinger of Colby purchased the Rib Lake Creamery last week from Dio Walty and took possession of same on Monday.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Emil E. Kostner, executive vice president of the Thorp Finance Corp., and an officer of several other financial insurance firms has been named as 1959’s “Man of the Year” by the alumni association of the Marquette University College of Business Administration.
 
Joseph Bandor, 78, and his wife, Victoria, 77, residents of rural Stanley, were fatally injured Sunday morning when their car collided with another car at the intersection of Highway 73 and F in Taylor County at Bellinger, 8 miles north of Thorp.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp Fire Department was summoned to the Doug Gulcynski residence, fire number 422, Rt. 3, Thorp, Thursday evening, October 25 at about 6:30.
 
Clark County’s unemployment rate is slightly higher than that of the rest of the state and the nation, according to statistics provided by the Medford Job Service Office.
 
Diane Stroinski has been named to the All-Conference Volleyball Team; named as honorable mentions to the All-Conference Volleyball Team are: Connie Kaz, Kim Oberle and Laurie Jo Voelker.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Thorp’s own Becky Strzok earned an Award of Excellence at the annual Masters of Cake Decorating Contest sponsored by Valley Bakers Association held at State Fair Park in West Allis, Wisconsin.
 
Chuck Rueth of the 4-H Leaders Federation presented the Friend of the 4-H Award to Carl Zajack of Area Equipment.
 
Thorp will receive a grant totaling $95,110 to improve housing for needy residents from the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs to help them provide clean and safe housing for the elderly, disabled, and low income people.
