100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – Dr. Starr, the local health officer, is making strenuous efforts to prevent the scarlet fever discovered here from becoming epidemic.
 
Bobb’s mill and Country’ Round – We are sorry to say that next Sunday afternoon Mr. Rowe will preach his farewell sermon.  Everyone try and turn out.
 
Gilman Newslets – Gilman is to have a new sawmill.  Smith Bros. & Co. of Barron are clearing ground and making preparations to build this fall.  The new mill will be located north of the Soo depot.
 
The dwelling house and barns on the farm of Klemons Haraburda, east of the village, were destroyed by fire on Saturday night last.  The buildings were unoccupied.
 
75 Years ago (1934)
 
Thirty years ago several Polish citizens of Thorp met and organized a local group of the Polish National Alliance of America. The purpose of this organization is to create good fellowship and, in short, to promote the welfare of the Polish people, to make good American citizens and to aid their fatherland in times of stress.  There were only fourteen members then.  Today local group 646 boasts a membership of over 150.
 
About 20 men are employed tearing up old Soo Line Railroad tracks between Abbotsford and Curtiss. The track is part of a line connecting Abbotsford and Owen and hasn’t been used for the past two years.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
An intra-board struggle over the election of a highway commissioner marked morning’s opening session of the annual fall meeting of the Clark County Board of Supervisors.  In balloting, Weyhmiller held most of the high cards and was returned to office by a 38 to 24 vote.
 
Ann Hedler, Thorp, was recently initiated into Phi Upsilon Omicron, national honorary home economics fraternity, at Stout State College, Menomonie. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hedler.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
Kris Boie, daughter of Rich and Carol Boie, Thorp, has won first place in the District Land Conservation Contest at Menomonie, October 30.  She now will go the state contest in Wisconsin Rapids on November 10, representing the West Central area in the junior division.
 
The Wisconsin Association of Nursing Homes, Inc. presents a special award annually to a nursing home employee in Wisconsin.  This year this special award went to Ruth Schmidt, Registered Nurse, and present Administrator of the Thorp Care Center.
 
Several Thorp area townships, including the towns of Thorp, Reseburg, Withee and Hixon favored Walter Mondale for president over Ronald Reagan.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
On November 4, 1999 the state assembly passed legislation allowing the state to lease and operate a privately-built prison near Stanley; a move area lawmakers called “a victory for our area economy and taxpayers.”
