100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – The tannery of the U. S. Leather Company at this place has already on hand several car loads of green hides wherewith to begin its leather making operations, which are expected to begin in about two weeks.
 
Polley Notes – W. S. Parks of Thorp was here several days last week on business.  He took home with him a trophy of the woods that gladdens the hearts of all good hunters.
 
Andrew Zollar of Marshfield, an expert in the line of car and training horses, again has charge of Herman Friess’ fast horses.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Edward Vach, aged 21, was shot while hunting in the Town of Hammel, Taylor County, on Saturday last and died later at the hospital at Medford.
 
The Clark County Highway Committee purchased a new 5-ton four wheel drive truck, less dump body, for a consideration of $5,600.
 
The grades have purchased a radio, which will be used for the radio program sponsored by the “School of the Air.”
 
Around the Corner – Alex Neiman is substituting for our local mail carrier during the hunting season.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
Richard McQuillan, 16, and Marvin Hallanger, 17, both of rural Thorp, wee instantly killed when McQuillan’s car left Hwy. 29 and struck a telephone pole a mile and three quarters east of Thorp Friday night.  Their deaths are the 10th and 11th in Clark County traffic this year.
 
Construction of a new bowling alley at Stanley was begun last week by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ziemba.  The 130 by 28 frame building will be located just south of the Little Club, owned and operated by the Ziembas.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
The Thorp Chapter of the national Multiple Sclerosis Society recently completed its fund driving efforts for 1984.  With the help of many Thorp Catholic School students and many local merchants, Thorp was able to donate $1,900.46 to the M. S. cause.
 
The first deer registered at Jerry’s Sport Shop opening morning of the 1984 gun deer hunting season was a six-point buck tagged by Dave Jacque, Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
In a time when small businesses come and go all too frequently, the Thorp Courier celebrates 117 years of continuous business.
 
Thorp property owners will have to wait just a while longer to find out what the mil rate will be for their property in the year 200.  The city has still not heard from the Department of Revenue for the final figure.
 
The grant monies have been applied for and affected Thorp property owners have been mailed letters this last week informing them that they have a tree removal and replacement option available to them.  The program, promoted by the Northern States Power Company (NSP) is an attempt to eliminate the costly and unsightly practice of trimming trees in the way of power lines.
