100 Years Ago (1909)

Stanley Sunbeams – The Northwestern Lumber Company is to move its general Offices from Eau Claire to Stanley about the first of January.
 
Alton Morris killed a 225 lb. bear in the woods northeast of town one day last week.
 
Geo. Zillman has purchased a vacuum cleaning machine for use at this residence, which sucks all dust collected on furniture and floors in the rooms, into an air-tight receptacle, making the job of house cleaning an easy one.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
The following men of Thorp went to Neillsville on Monday last to register for admittance to a CCC Camp:  Fred Barrett, Andrew Kubera, Henry Huls, John Hmielak, Harry Cordes, Joseph Yetsko, Cletus Elmendorf and John Crowley.
 
Twenty below zero on Wednesday morning.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – Wm. Jordan, who owned a span of mules for several years, recently disposed of them to a party near Gilman.
 
The market for cheese is steadily improving and 13˘ is now the quoted price, a lead of five cents over a year ago.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
The count, which Thorp has been relying upon to qualify for city mail service, has been taken and doesn’t look very promising; if Thorp has a total of 1615, falling short of 1800 by 185 persons recommended by a postal inspector on his visit here last week.
 
Marian Herman, head lineman for the Thorp Telephone Company, was elected president of the Thorp Volunteer Fire Department at their regular meeting held Monday evening at the fire hall here.  Others who will serve as officers with the new president include: Vice President – Ted Meyer; Sec.-Treas. – Cliff Ebben, The firemen also by ballot named Ray Zaborowski as Fire Chief.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
A Thorp woman was killed about mid-afternoon Friday after the car she was driving was struck by a westbound Soo Line Freight train at the North Washington Street intersection, Thorp.
 
A 75-year-old Thorp man was found dead from exposure early Monday, December 17 in the Town of Mead. Frank Fillo, of rural Thorp, was found in a ditch at 9:30 a.m. Monday along a Town of Mead road, Clark County Authorities said.
 
In the recent football awards program at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Jay Stuttgen was awarded his letter jacket for earning his second letter in football.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
 Thorp Public Schools Superintendent Gerald Eichman announced at the December 15 school board meeting that if the district continued at its present level of operation a $200,000 budget shortfall could be expected in the 2000-2001 school budget.
 
Katie Slowiak took 3rd place in the Knights of Columbus Punt, Pass & Kick state competition held in Marshfield on October 30th.
