100 Years Ago (1909)

A large crew of men filled John McGrogan’s large ice house, from his pond, last week. The chunks, about 3500 in number are about sixteen inches thick, and the quality first-class.
 
Oliver McKee, who is attending the State University at Madison, was the guest of his father, M. S. McKee here last week.
 
F. O. Bibie has been appointed superintendent of the Chippewa County asylum and poor farm in the place of Ralph Dickinson, deceased.
 
75 Years Ago (1934)
 
Nineteen members of the class of ’32 of Thorp High School were present at Bloom’s Cafe, Dec. 30th at a reunion of the class.  Those present were: Arthur Slota, Margaret Snyder, Merlin Coates, Esther Phillips, Donald Possley, Kenneth Bobb, Leo Tobola, Ruth Stookey, Roger Lawrence, Theresa Herman, William Tobola, Arthur Evenson, Vernon Burss, Verna Swierkowski, Edith Bradle, Stelle Koscieracki, Mercedes Schmitt, Roger Possley, and Ruth Thielke; also Mr. Qualle and Mr. Schoch.  Miss Butler was also invited but did not get there.
 
50 Years Ago (1959)
 
On December 24, 1959, telephone No. 1100 was installed by the Thorp Tel. Co., in the Frank Sonnentag farm residence located 5 miles east and 5 miles south of Thorp.
 
If it isn’t a case of flu at most of the homes these days, then it’s the mumps.
 
Reseburg Ramblings – Sp/4 Roger H. Frese has received his discharge from the Army and is home for Christmas after spending the past sixteen months in Germany.
 
25 Years Ago (1984)
 
On the recommendations of City Attorney Richard Collman, the Thorp City Council decided to sign an agreement with the Dept. of  Natural Resources stating that they (the) city will close its landfill site by July 1, 1999.
 
Because of shortages, the Clark County Public Health Nursing Service will only give the three doses of DTP vaccine in the primary series to infants. The shortage will last until late spring.
 
Despite costly injuries to key players early in the season, the Thorp High School girl’s basketball team is going into Christmas recess with an impressive 3-1 conference record.
 
10 Years Ago (1999)
 
Bill and Barb Nolechek accepted the TBA Business person of the month award on behalf of Nolechek Meats, Inc.  Bill and his brother Kelly along with sisters, Jennifer and Tracy, now run the family business.
 
The Reseburg Ramblers 4-H Club recently donated signs to the City of Thorp. The school signs will help residents and visitors locate Thorp Schools.
 
The State Bank of Withee has received an “Outstanding” rating on compliance with the nation’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
