100 Years Ago (1910)

Stanley Sunbeams – At three o’clock in the morning of January 11th fire broke out on Broadway St. in the Steven’s Saloon building.  A small building situated on the north side of the saloon and used as a barbershop was also badly burned.

Gilman Newslets – Gilman experienced its first fire on last Friday afternoon when the large general store and butcher shop of Kapszukiewicz Bros. burned to the ground.

While the sleighing is none too good in this vicinity, log, bolt and wood hauling have commenced in earnest, and teams are busy. Cars are scare for shipping cordwood.

Heiser & Burkhardt’s new mill is now in running order.

75 Years Ago (1935)
 
Tom Foster, Stanley’s pioneer proprietor of the picture theatre of that city, died on Thursday of last week after an illness extending over a period of several years.

Roger Creek and Town Line – The local cheese factory paid 33 cents per lb. for B. F. Jan. 2. – Rumor has it that Silas Thompson has purchased a residence in Stanley and will soon move to that city.

Roger Creek and Town Line – The side roads are again closed to motor traffic and as a result cutters, bob sleds and even logging sleds are being brought into use and the merry jingle of sleigh bells is once more heard in the land.

50 Years Ago (1960)

Clark County Superintendent of Schools, Leonard Morley, is pleased to announce that the Clark County Special Schools at Neillsville and Owen are again the recipients of a very fine Christmas present.  Thorp Finance Corporation of Thorp donated a check for one thousand dollars to the school and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Conway Foundation donated a check for five hundred dollars.

A substantial increase in practically all phases of business was enjoyed at the Thorp Post Office during the past year and especially in the month of December.

25 Years Ago (1985)

Beverly L. Stevens was honored as 1984 Volunteer of the Year by the Wisconsin National Multiple Sclerosis Society board of directors at its Christmas luncheon last month in Milwaukee.

Clark County Circuit Judge Lowell D. Schoengarth has announced his retirement effective January 8, 1985, after serving 29 years as a judge in Clark County.

Jim Crotteau, Thorp High School FBLA member and Jan Stuttgen, FBLA Secretary, donate on behalf of the FBLA, informational placemats to Thorpedo owners Jim and Judy Pfalzgraf to be used at the Thorpedo.

10 Years Ago (2000)

While it may seem as though everyone you know is sick with flu, is there really a flu epidemic raging in Thorp?  According to Sharman Frese, a registered nurse at Marshfield Center in Thorp, only two cases have been confirmed at the clinic this season.

Governor Tommy Thompson signed a $2.2 million contract with Mathy Construction Company of Onalaska to reconstruct an 11-mile section of WIS 73 from Nye Street in Thorp to Hannibal Road in Taylor County.

The Thorp City Council will hire Ehlers and Associates to help them through the process of forming the new TID #6 in the East Industrial Park
