100 Years Ago (1910)

Stanley Sunbeams – At three o’clock in the morning of January 11th a fire broke out on Broadway St. in the Steven’s Saloon building.  A small building situated on the north side of the saloon and used as a barbershop was also badly burned.
 
Gilman Newslets – Gilman experienced its first fire on last Friday afternoon when the large general store and butcher shop of Kapszukiewicz Bros. was also badly burned.
 
While the sleighing is none too good in this vicinity, log, bolt and wood hauling have commenced in earnest, and teams are busy. Cars are scarce for shipping cordwood.
 
Heiser & Burkhardt’s new mill is now in running order.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
According to the figures released Tuesday by Calvin Mills, county clerk, a total of 3,725 hunting licenses were issued through his office and agencies this fall.
 
Last Saturday a snowstorm developed from the southeast and continued at a steady pace all day long leaving a surplus of about ten inches in depth.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – George Hanson finished working on the roads last week. – James Timlin, Sr. won a prize of $2.50 for producing the second largest hens’ egg at a contest staged by the Crane Co. in Stanley.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Eight persons have been subpoenaed to testify at a John Doe hearing into possible misuse of funds within Taylor County Highway Department.
 
C. C. Guell of Thorp has received confirmation of his appointment to the Legislature Council’s Commercial Code committee.
 
The local post of the American Legion will sponsor its Ninth Annual Ice Carnival with the aid of Thorp Business men.
 
Pupil Transportation in the public schools of Clark County last year reached an all time high.  A total of 3,278 public school pupils were transported to public schools at a total cost of $220,250 per school tern excluding extra-curricular trips.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
Representatives from the Department of Natural Resources and from Cooper Engineering attended the regular monthly city council meeting Monday, January 14, to give input into Thorp’s problem with lead in some resident’s water.  Steve Thon, a DNR representative, said there were two ways of solving the problem: 1) By treating it as a lead problem; or 2) by treating it as an aggressive water problem.
 
Patricia A. Knudtson, wife of Police Chief of Thorp, WI, Robert L. Knudtson, was honored in Madison at a noon luncheon at the Top O’ the Park Restaurant on January 3, 1985, for her devoted, faithful and competent 16 ½ years of service as the Administrative Assistant at the State Capitol for State Senator Gerald D. Lorge.

Two women became the latest accident victims on Clark County roads Tuesday when a vehicle driven by Edna M. Olds, 90, of Owen, was traveling westbound in the wrong lane of STH 29 and collided with an eastbound vehicle driven by Carol W. Wood, 39, of Menomonie, at about 2:40 p.m.  Both women were pronounced dead at the scene of multiple injuries.  This totals four fatalities for Clark County this year.
