100 Years Ago (1910)

Depot agent John Phillippi informs us that the Soo officials have decided to build a new depot at this station instead of spending a considerable sum in repairing the one now in use. This same old depot was bought and paid for by subscriptions of the businessmen a good many ago and looked good to all even though it was a second hand structure at the time.
 
Chas Sikorski is building a barn 36 x 38 feet in size on his farm east of the village.  Mike Szymczek, contractor is doing the work.
 
S. W. Pierson, deputy for the Mystic Workers, instituted a lodge of that order at Withee last week with over twenty members.  Sam is doing much good work along the insurance line.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
William Klouda left for St. Paul on Sunday morning where he will take an examination preparatory to taking a course in aviation.
 
At a meeting of Thorp players and fans last Thursday evening, A. G. Huls was chosen to pilot the team the coming season with Ray Smigaj as advisor.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – The Roger Creek Cheese Factory paid 41 cents per pound for butterfat on April 2nd.
 
Breezy Hill Cheese Factory Neighborhood – Loren Misfeldt, Firman Bauers, Romaine Heiser and Kermit Cook, who have been in CCC camps the past nine months, have enlisted for another six months’ term.  They are stationed at Newald.
 
Pineland Corners – Michael Kowielski was elected chairman of the Withee-Reseburg community of the corn-hog association.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Thorp High School was admitted to the North Central Ass’n of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
 
The opening sale of the 1960 season, the 23rd year, will start today, Thursday, April 7th at Mattes Livestock Market, three miles south, two miles east of Thorp.
 
The City of Thorp and the four area townships turned out for a large vote Tuesday to give Sen. John Kennedy the majority of the votes over his opponent Sen. Hubert Humphrey.

Randy Klapatauskas is a new Mid-State Insurance agent joining Dave Shewczyk at the Thorp Mid-State Insurance agency.
 
First time challenger Phil Miller and six-year incumbent Roger Alger are the voters’ choices for the three-year Thorp Board of Education terms decided in Tuesday’s spring election.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)
 
Since Thorp is not located in the heart of the Rockies, Kent Weiler, with the help of Thorp High School Guidance Counselor and experienced rock climber, Duane Frerichs, began researching the construction of a man-made mountain.  The project was approved and for their money, the district got materials and labor for a permanent wall plus twelve hours of teacher instruction.  In addition the district received climbing harnesses, belay devises and rope.  The equipment is stored within the folding security wall, which makes sure that the wall is not used except during supervised instruction time.  Why a climbing wall?  Climbing is a great tool for teachers to teach teamwork and cooperation.
