100 Years Ago (1910)

Bobbs’ Mill and country ‘Round – Rather lonesome around these corners as the old mill whistle has ceased to blow.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – The grand opening of the Stanley driving park, together with the baseball match between Stanley and Eau Claire and the trap shooting by the local Rod and Gun Club were snowed under on Sunday with six inches of real snow.
 
Kolpien Bros. received a fourteen-horse power auto buggy on Friday last.  It is a trim neat looking rig.
 
Nearly a foot of snow fell in this vicinity on Saturday last.  The weather continues warm however, and little damage has resulted so far.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
Arrangements are about complete for the dedication of the new auditorium the 30th.  Jas. Norton, chef at the Hotel Charles at Marshfield for several years, and also owner of the Soo Hotel at Thorp, will prepare the food and superintend the serving of the food at the new auditorium banquet at the dedication on next Tuesday evening.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – The recent strong winds loosened a portion of the basement wall under Lawrence Thompson’s barn.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Ray “Red” Smigaj put in his last day as boss, mechanic, salesman, etc., of the Red Arrow Garage and Service Station here on Highway 29 Saturday last.
 
Members of the Thorp Male Chorus presenting “Variety of Music” are First and Second Tenors: Bill Mitchell, Gene Rosemeyer, Rudy Vekljan, Melvin Smith, George Brian, Bill Adair, Roy Brede and Jack LaGasse.  Baritones and Basses: Art Brisette, Dave Hull, Casey Grucelski, Justin Rosemeyer, Ray Woods, Al Ciolkosz, John Rodda, Ray Izydorek, Lyle Christensen, Byron Bogumill and Joe Meske.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
Russell Martin, 3-year-old son of Jason and Eva Martin, Rt. 1, Thorp, suffocated on Friday, April 12, 1985 following an accident at his parent’s farm.  The child died of asphyxiation after a sliding door on a gravity box fell on him while he was at play.
 
Dr. Edward Sopiarz, a former Thorp resident, recently retired from the University of Toledo (Ohio) faculty as professor emeritus of economics.
 
The Thorp Public Library is celebrating National Library Week, April 14th through the 20th with a new copy machine.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)
  
Thorp area ladies can now rely on Tammy’s Tip Top Nail Shop to help keep their hands looking their best.  Located at 210 E. Stanley Street in Thorp, Tammy’s is owned by licensed nail technician Tammy Staniec.
 
Those folks at Nolechek’s Meats, Inc. are at it again!  They’ve proven once more that their products are unsurpassed in excellence.  They received seven awards at the 61st annual Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors held in Middleton, WI, April 7-9.
 
A committee of concerned volunteers is in the process of organizing a benefit for Zachary Wald.  Zachary is the 7-year-old son of David and Lori Wald and a first grader at Stanley Elementary. He has been diagnosed with Leukemia and is under-going chemotherapy treatments at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
