100 Years Ago (1910)

 Worden Wavelets – Gilbert Lucken had a shingling bee last Friday for the purpose of shingling his new barn. – Wallace Landry’s school had vacation last week while he was attending to the duties of census taker.
 
Bobbs’ Mill and Country’ Round – Barney Zawdeski’s house burned to the ground Friday night about five o’clock.
 
Harry Cordes is employed as harness maker at Herman Banderob’s shop.
 
While returning home from Stanley on Saturday evening last in his automobile, Claus Kolpien was thrown from the machine by suddenly striking a rut in the road near Stanley and fell in such a manner as to break his left leg just above the ankle.  Dr. F. D. Jackey set the limb.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
The dedication ceremonies of the new high school auditorium on Tuesday night proved to be an elaborate affair.  Four hundred and seventy persons were served at the banquet and the balconies were filled to capacity.
 
The W. C. O. F. installed the following officers at their monthly meeting last Thursday evening; Chief Ranger – Margaret Voelker; Vice Chief Ranger – Celia Micke; Rec. Sec. – Mary Soderberg; Fin. Sec. – Charolotte Schmidt; Treas. – Marie Kremsreiter; Trustees – Mary Hickman, Mary Haas, Josephine Voelker; Senior Conductor – Clara Ebben; Junior Conductor – Elizabeth Leiby; Sentinels – Elizabeth Gengler, Amelia Haas.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – The Roger Creek Telephone Co. which has operated a farmer’s line for the past twenty years or more, has gone out of business and the line is being taken down.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
The Thorp Fire Department was called at 5:10 a.m., Thursday to St. Hedwig’s rectory to put out a fire that started in a mattress.
 
Ground was broken at Owen, Monday morning, for a new Frederick Post Manufacturing Company plant expected to boost the firm’s workforce from 125 to 200.
 
A telephone receiver off the hook was part of the reason the Irwin Sniegowski farm home was destroyed by fire near here Saturday morning.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
A 5-year-old Stanley boy died on April 23, as a result of injuries sustained during a fire in is home the preceding day. Ralph Gravitte Jr., was the son of Ralph Gravitte and Linda Halverson, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Rodgers of Thorp.
 
A 69-year-old Stanley woman died April 25, 1985 from burns suffered after a camper explosion on the 24th.  Martha Seufzer was the sister of Etta (Mrs. Steve) Dus of Thorp.
 
Dan Ciokiewicz developed new barn cleaning equipment out of need, and soon discovered he had a marketable product.  The tools are currently manufactured by Joe Lato at Thorp Barn Equipment while Dan explores the possibility of selling them to other farm equipment retailers.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)
 
Thorp High School senior class top ten percent: Shannon Einhorn, Jason Jacks, Kyle Klapatauskas, Andrea Larson, Molly Meyer, Lane Peleschak, Kelly Schauer.
 
The Thorp Public Library now has a portable energy meter (PEM) for use by patrons.  The meter was provided by the Northern States Power Company to help customers measure and evaluate the energy used by their appliances.
