100 Years Ago (1910)

Stanley Siftings – The automobile barn of Dr. C. H. Erdman caught fire, about two o’clock on Friday morning and made a big blaze to the alarm of the citizens of Stanley.  The fire, however, was soon controlled by the firemen after it had spread to Mr. McMillar’s woodshed.
 
Worden Wavelets – The Fourth was celebrated at Stanley by a few from our vicinity but the majority stayed quietly at home.  A sane Fourth has surely been accepted as the proper thing by “our folks” – Butcher Freiss and little son of Thorp, had a narrow escape last Tuesday while passing through our neighborhood.  The axle of his cart broke throwing him from the cart and in order to save himself and boy, lost his hold on the horse, which started at full speed leaving parts of the cart along the road.  Fortunately neither were hurt.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
A deluge of ran (rain) struck this section of the county Sunday evening, accompanied by thunder and lightning.  The barn of W. E. Barrett, in the village, was struck but not burned.  Ig Wujciks’ house, north of the village, was struck the same evening and burned to the ground.
 
The fire alarm was sounded in the village about ten o’clock Saturday morning when the garage at the Hugo Holzhausen residence caught fire.  The hose was laid and the fire quickly extinguished.
 
The Ford V-8 belonging to F. J. Conway was stolen Monday from his garage in the village.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Thorp Orbits – Through the courtesy of The Milwaukee Braves management and our good friend, Don Davidson, Public Relations Director, the Thorp Pee Wee and Babe Ruth Leagues have received passes for the August 10th game.  All that needs to be done now, raise some money for transportation plus getting chaperones.
 
Cyril Alger was installed as Commander of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118.
 
The Thorp Businessmen’s Community Picnic held Sunday at the city park in the afternoon was attended by over 2000 persons from far and wide – more than expected.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
Lewis and Connie Deegan are the new owners of the Cantina Family Restaurant on North Washington Street.  They opened the restaurant, specializing in Mexican and American foods, on June 25th.
 
A cow having twins is unusual enough, but triplets, is a rarity indeed. Three calves were born Friday, June 28th on the farm of Bob Kodl, north of Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)
 
The Clark County Sheriff’s Department investigated a fatal accident that occurred July 1, 2000, at 3:30 p.m. on CTH N and Romadka Rd., near Popple River Bridge. Ten-year-old Jessica H. Porath of N13281 CTH D, Owen, was air lifted from the scene.
 
The mystery surrounding this year’s Thorp High School Alumni honoree was finally solved at the annual dinner Saturday.  The alumni honored Angie Teclaw with the first Cardinal Award.
 
Compare the 1918 graduation picture of Mildred (Albert) Jones with Mildred in real life and it is clear that 99 years of life have hardly touched her.  She is the oldest living Thorp High School Alumni.
