100 Years Ago (1910)

Kasper Skrapinski’s team ran away on Saturday last, colliding with Jon Meyer’s buggy in front of the bank almost totally demolishing the buggy.
 
County superintendent A. O. Rhea is engaged at present in entertaining young and all interested in astronomical observations. Mr. Rhea received a new Brasher telescope, four inch objective, focal length five feet, highest power 400 diameters, last week, and his nightly observations of the heavens are interesting to himself and all who call for a squint at the heavenly bodies.
 
Jos. Bogumill has a crew of carpenters engaged in remodeling his building, which he recently purchased from Paul Zwolinski.  He is putting in store fixtures and will open a stock of dry goods and groceries as soon as all arrangements are completed.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)

 
A call from police at Antigo Wednesday morning informed Mr. Bogumill that his Ford V-8 was recovered near that place. The thieves however got away but papers left in the car indicate that they were from Cornell, WI.  The car was intact and OK except for holes from bullets, which were shot by the police in the pursuit.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – About thirty people attended the annual school meeting in the Roger Creek district.  $330 was raised for all purposes.
 
50 Years Ago (1960)

 
Roy A. Swanson, vocational agriculture instructor at Thorp, WI for the past 21 years, was awarded a gold wrist watch by the Sears Roebuck Co. for completing 25 years of teaching vocational agriculture at Madison, Thursday night, July 14.
 
Mr. Roger A. Hedrington, a 1960 graduate of WI State College, Eau Claire, WI has been appointed head football and assistant basketball coach at Thorp High School.
 
Robert Englebretson, 19, rural Owen, drowned in Chapman Lake at Stanley Sunday night 10 minutes after the beach closed and  the lifeguard left.
 
Thorp, being such a small town as it is; you never know what you’ve been up to until the gossip gets back to you.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)

 
Helen Suttner, 56, Rt. 1, Curtiss, died July 3rd after an accident on CTH X, 4 miles west of Thorp.  Suttner struck the dual wheels of a semitrailer driven by Eugene Hagenson, 43, Rt. 2, Stanley.
 
Construction began recently on a new whey evaporator on the property of Blue Moon Cheese Co. in Thorp.
 
Dr. Dick Bourie has joined the Three Rivers Veterinary Clinic Staff.
 
Members of the Roosevelt Rod and Gun Club released 1100 walleyes into Otter Lake in Chippewa County, near Stanley, Tuesday, July 9th.
 
10 Years Ago (2000)

  
 The Thorp area Boy Scouts had a larger than average numbers of boys reach Eagle Scout status. Such an honor takes commitment and hard work. Eric Rogalski was among those boys who stuck with Boy Scouting and made it.  The following is his essay.
 
The Cecil Tormey Post #118 of Thorp donated flags to the Thorp Public School District to replace those that had been tattered and worn.  Keeping the American Flag in good condition is a sign of respect.
