100 Years Ago (1910)

Stanley Siftings – The city council is taking steps towards installing an electric motor at the city pumping station.
 
The last remaining one of the old plank street crossings on Main Street was taken up on Saturday last and rebuilt with concrete and cement.
 
Worden Wavelets – Howard Landry and Wm. Kenney returned last Saturday from Oshkosh, where they have been attending summer school during the past six weeks.
 
75 Years Ago (1935)
 
Barney S. Harycki, of the Town of Thorp, was drowned in the Jump River about two miles west of Sheldon early Friday morning while swimming.  He had reached the age of thirty-five years, two months and twenty-two days.
 
The Walter Borysiewicz Tavern and office building on the corner of Washington and School Street in the village, was sold by F. J. Conway at receiver’s sale on Tuesday to Mike Sneider, the highest bidder, at $9,200.
 
The Peoples Exchange Bank is now issuing the new Bank Money Order, which has the receipt feature to the customer, at a lower rate than Postal or Express Money Orders.
 
Roger Creek and Town Line – Theodore Slowiak is tearing down the old log barn on his farm presumably to make room for a more modern structure.
 
The annex on the Methodist Church just recently completed, will be dedicated on Sunday next. 
 
50 Years Ago (1960)
 
Mr. Alois Witor of Random Lake, WI, announces the engagement of his daughter, Ruth E. to Eugene P. Wilhelm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene J. Wilhelm of Thorp.  A late fall wedding is being planned.
 
In a church bulletin Sunday, it was announced that St. Hedwig’s Cemetery Ass’n has repealed the 300 pound weight limit on vaults. 
 
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ebben who recently purchased the Gordon Wolf house on the north side moved into it the first week in August.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Allen Babbitt, who ran a restaurant in Thorp fifteen years ago will return to Thorp and start a restaurant again in the Soo Hotel.  Mr. Babbitt is the brother of Mrs. Harold Hallanger.
 
25 Years Ago (1985)
 
Thorp Police arrested two Taylor County juveniles and one Thorp juvenile in July in connection with a burglary last month at the home of Ken and Beverly Stevens, according to Thorp Police Chief Knudtson.
 
Rickey Haas, son of Richard and Barb Haas, formerly of Thorp, attended Science World ’85 at Pigeon Lake near Drummond, Wisconsin, July 14-20.
 
Members of the Wausau Antique Auto Club stopped by the T. P. Inn in Thorp Saturday, August 3rd while on their way to Sunday’s Chippewa Car Show.  Twelve of the classic autos stopped by, featuring two 1931 Buick Phaetons as the oldest and a 1951 Ford as the newest.

The new 15-bed senior assisted living center, Rosewood Villa, tops the list of construction projects this past year.
 
Thorp High School student Jason Wittek is among 286 Wisconsin students participating in Business World at Ripon College from July 16-20.  The students learn directly from state business leaders how Wisconsin businesses operate.
