The Thorp Courier (Thorp, WI) Old Items Taken from The Thorp Courier files of 1893-1918-1943-1968-1983100 Years Ago (1893) Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Archie Goodwin on Feb. 4th, a son. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Jackson, on Thursday last. Taxpayers and residents of the territory hereinafter described, hereby give notice that we will on Monday, March 13, 1893, or as soon thereafter as counsel can be heard apply to the Circuit Court for Clark County, State of Wisconsin, for an order incorporating as a Village to be known as the Village of Thorp, the territory situated in the towns of Thorp and Withee in Clark County, State of Wisconsin, embraced within the following described boundary line. D. J. Spaulding has sold his Clark County lands and mills to John Owens of Eau Claire. Steven Franckowiak (Franczkowiak?) and Miss Antonia Wichlacz were married at the Catholic Church in this village by Rev. Frydrowicz on Monday morning last. By referring to the proceedings of the town board of Withee, in another column, it will be seen that the proposed incorporation of the village will be vigorously opposed, at least by outsiders. No public spirited citizen within the proposed village territory has as yet announced himself in opposition to taking this step, which no doubt will prove a great benefit, and ought to have been taken years ago. Louis Johnson, the shoemaker, shipped a large dry goods box full of boots and shoes to Medford on Tuesday; all having been made for men in Jos. Gibson’s camps who, evidently, know the class of work Mr. Johnson turns out. He makes a specialty of driving shoes. Chas. Cords, who went to Milwaukee on Monday of last week to consult with physicians regarding the state of his health, died at his father’s residence in that city on Saturday afternoon last. Mr. Cordes became a resident of this village in 1888, starting a cigar manufactory, which business he has followed here ever since. 75 Years Ago Reseburg – Stephen Smigaj has sold $200 worth of baled hay this winter. –Henry Rossman is getting material together for a machine shed and poultry house. Bobb’s Mill – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bohren on the 15th and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bobb’s on the 16th. Worden – Oscar Boie underwent an operation for appendicitis last Wednesday at the hospital at Chippewa Falls. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Barrett on Sunday, Feb. 10th, at Marshfield. Ben J. Broeren has accepted a position as assistant at the E. C. Crane elevator at Owen and will move his family to that city in the near future. Miss Florence Seldon has taken a position as operator at the local telephone central which position was acceptably filled for several years by Miss Beth Aucutt. A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sinkler of Smith Mills, Minn. last week Tuesday. Mrs. Sinkler is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. B. Parkhill. The shipping of milk from here to the Condensery at Bloomer was discontinued on Thursday last owing to the maximum price being reduced to $2.58 per 100 pounds by order of the federal food commission. Steve Kinast, age seventeen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Kinast of the Town of Withee, died at the hospital at Marshfield on Sunday morning last. A pretty home wedding was solemnized in this village at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry D. Aucutt on Thursday afternoon, February 14th, 1918. The contracting parties were Miss Beth Aucutt and Mr. Joseph Schmittfranz. 50 Years Ago Julius Morgan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Morgan of Thorp, who has been in training for the past eight months, successfully completed his course in the Ari Force Advanced Flying School at Luke Field, Phoenix, Arizona, and received the coveted silver wings and a Second Lieutenant’s Commission in the Air Corps Reserve. Following is a list of Thorp men who were accepted in the different branches of service in the February contingent: Army: Walter Hryniewicki, George Mendalski, Harry Burzinski, Malen Teclaw, Leon Morgan, and Navy: Hughie Mallo, Sammie Borowski. Stuart C. Walsdorf, son of Louis P. Walsdorf, of Thorp, graduated from the U.S. Naval Training School for radiomen at the University of Chicago last week. He was given an immediate promotion to rating of Seaman, second class. Michael Verkuilen, a former Thorp man, was granted a commission a Lieutenant, junior grade, in the U. S. Naval Training School at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio Dec. 21, 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Reineke announce the marriage of their daughter, Laura to Duane Bowen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Bowen, of Eau Claire on February 5, 1943. Taft – Mr. and Mrs. Joe Romanowski are the proud parents of a baby girl born last week. News has been received of the arrival of a seven pound, two ounce daughter, Helen Jean, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ebben at Kohler, Jan. 23, 1943. Gilman – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ted Schmidt a daughter on Monday, February 22. 25 Years Ago Because she finished first in a written knowledge and attitude examination for senior girls December 5, Betty Claussen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Claussen has been named 1968 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for Thorp High School. Basel, Switzerland was the setting for the marriage of Suzette Ann Mikolainis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gedmon Mikolainis of Thorp, to Sp/4 Gary Leigh Matzinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenway Steuerwald of Adell, Wis. They were married February 6, 1968 in a ceremony at the Zivilstrandsamt in Basel.
A daughter, Amy Lee, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Alger of St. Paul, on
Sunday, Feb. 18. The little miss weighed 7 lbs. 14 ¼ oz.
