100 Years Ago (1893)
L. H. McGuire’s bus team enjoyed themselves by running away three times
on Saturday last. No damage!
Miss Carrie Keller, of Graceville, Minn., and C. D. Overeacker, for
several weeks night operator here, were married in this village on Feb.
13th.
Among those contemplating building handsome new dwellings in this
village the coming summer are Max Weber, E. R. Wiley and P. Schroeder.
M. S. McKee went to Plover Saturday last to take charge of the school
there. Ed. Fults has taken the Sterling school where Mr. McKee has
been teaching for several weeks past.
M. Cotter, who is employed in M. Denney’s camp north of Stanley, was in
town on Sunday. He reports the hauling of a load of logs scaling
12,400 feet a distance of three miles, with one team, at Mr. Denney’s
camp on Saturday last.
On Monday evening last a night crew was put to work at J. W. Cirkle &
Sons stave and heading factory in this village. Three heading saws are
being run nights, which will greatly increase the amount of manufactured
stock and also give employment to about twenty more men. Having
plenty of stock for the entire seasons run; this step was made
necessary. This company are also building more sheds, and getting
lumber on the ground for their new dry kilns.
Stanley Sunbeams – At the present time nearly 2,000,000 feet of logs are
piled in Nye, Lusk & Hudson’s mill yard at this place. – The N.W.L. Cos
mill has been overhauled this winter, and another set of machinery has
been put in on the south side of the mill so that its cutting capacity
is now twice as much as it was before.
75 Years Ago (1918)
Neiman’s Corner – Stanley Neiman went to Neillsville last Sunday to be
examined for army service.
Butlerville – Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Tieman are the proud parents of a baby
girl, born the 23rd.
Reseburg – Roy Brown, who has been failing in health for several weeks,
was taken to the Luther Hospital at Eau Claire Friday.
South Point – Conrad Barth and Willie Hickman were called to Neilslville
last week for physical examination.
Worden – Wm. Krause Jr. went to Davenport, Iowa, last week to take
chiropractic treatment. His sister, Miss Elsie, accompanied him.
Bonczyk’s Corner – Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Lindquist a daughter on
Feb. 22 – Mrs. Cebelinski who has been sick was taken to the hospital at
Marshfield where she underwent an operation for appendicitis. – School
is being taught every Saturday so to have an early vacation and let the
children help with the garden work in the spring.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Rusk on Wednesday of last
week.
Among the young men from this vicinity who were called to report to the
county board of examiners at Neillsville during the past week were: John
Shabach, Conrad Barth, Tony Glamkowski, Wilfred Vanderhyden, Guy Leiby,
Henry Irish, Chas and H. Thiel, Joe Radke, Stanley Ulasiuk, Hugo Quast,
Mike Lesniewski, John Crowley, L. Zukowski, Joe Hilgert, Wm. McParland,
Joe Walsdorf.
Mike Lesniewski and John Crowley, who were examined at Neillsville, last
week as to their fitness for army service and placed in class A, have
volunteered and leave here today for Columbus, Ohio, to enter the
engineer corps and will be assigned later.
Mr. Edgar Wood and Mrs. Lottie Howe were united in Marriage Saturday,
Feb. 16, 1918, at the Baptist Parsonage.
Word has been received that August Pagel now in Uncle Sam’s service left
for somewhere across about two weeks ago.
Mary Pagel, past two and one-half years supervisor and anesthetist at
the Iowa Lutheran Hospital of Des Moines, has been appointed assistant
superintendent of nurses at the institution and on her spare time is
taking a course in Pathology and Radiology.
Death again invaded the home of J. D. Elmendorf last week and claimed
the wife and mother of that household. A son aged ten years, died
about two weeks ago, and the constant, vigil of the mother at his
bedside, in conjunction with heart trouble caused a sudden collapse on
Thursday evening last ending a short time later in death. Eliza
Jane Alger was born at Rushford, Wis., on April 3, 1871, and died Feb.
21, 1918.
50 Years Ago (1943)
The task of issuing Ration Book No. 2 to families in this community went
along smoothly last week and was completed on Thursday evening with a
total of 5,018 books given out. The number of declarations
received (one for each family) was 1,338.
A. M. Aslakson purchased the N. P. Hanson residence property last week.
Roger Creek – Mr. and Mrs. Chester Powell of Mobridge, S.D., write that
they have a new daughter named Mary Elizabeth.
Breezy Hill – Mr. and Mrs. Otto Beckman received an announcement of a
new grandson, Lloyd Arnold Butterfield at Hayward on Feb. 17th.
Neiman’s Corner – Mrs. Michael Lukasiewicz was taken to St. Joseph’s
Hospital last week, where she was operated on for appendix and gall
stones last Wednesday.
25 Years Ago (1968)
An Owen-Withee High School senior, Duane A. Smith, 17, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Milford Smith, route 2, Owen is Clark County’s latest highway
accident victim. He was killed about 9 p.m. last Tuesday, Feb. 10,
2 ½ miles east of Owen on Highway 29, when the pickup truck which he was
driving collided almost head on with a semi truck.
Antonia Wozniak, 83, of Owen, died Friday morning at the Clark County
Hospital.
Word has been received by area relatives of the death of Caroline Lee
Joyce, 64, in Oakland, Calif., on Feb. 22nd.
Funeral services for Ivan Kuehl, 21 years old, were held on Jan. 25,
1968.
Pfc. John A. Orzechowski had basic training at Fort Campbell, KY.
After basic training he had advance training for twelve weeks at Fort
Eustis, VA in how to repair and fly helicopters and firing guns.
South Worden – Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dahl are the proud parents of a new
baby boy born Feb. 12.
Bobb’s Mill – Word was received last week of the death of Mrs. Pearl
Kendall of Spokane, Wash. Mrs. Kendall the former Pearl Marshall
was born and raised in our community.
Breezy Hill – A baby boy weighing 8 lbs. 9 oz, was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Chas. Frinack Jr. at Chippewa Falls Hospital on Sunday forenoon.
Hundreds of former classmates of one of Mount Greenwood’s most popular
young men, Pfc. Robert D. Nawrocki, 19, Chicago, Ill., joined the
Felix Nawrocki family and other relatives Feb. 12 in last sad rites for
the young marine. He is the grandson of Mrs. Anna Nendza of Thorp.
Pfc. Nawrocki was killed Jan. 24 in Quang Tri Province, Viet Nam.
