100 Years Ago (1893)
Ara Warner has been engaged by manager Jos. Hammel to play ball with
the Medford club this season. Holzhausen’s new cheese factory at
Zimmer’s corners in the new town of Reseburg is nearly ready to commence
its seasons work. F. D. Winter has carpenters at work on his new
store building which will soon be up and enclosed. It will be a
handsome structure. Victor Fellows has purchased a machine for
making brick at a rate of 15,000 per day, and expects to begin
manufacturing in a short time. Miss Lizie Kelley, teacher in the
second primary, has been ill for several days past, and Miss Julia
Garrison has been teaching in her department. The marriage of
Thomas Biddle and Miss May Craig, daughter of Nelson Craig, took place
at Stanley on Sunday last, C. a. Krupp officiating justice. Jos.
Sheblak and Miss Mary Kleckner were united in marriage at the Catholic
Church at Edson on Tuesday. Bobb’s Mill – We are informed that
we are to have another saw mill and beading factory here in the near
future. Neillsville got the $15,000 appropriation for the
location of a normal school at that place at the special meeting of the
county board held last week. Longwood – Born to Mr. and Mrs.
Ernst Poppe a 10 lb. baby boy last Wednesday. Stanley Sunbeams –
The number of employees in and around the N.W.L. Co’s saw mill is 75. –
Ole Olson, the south side merchant, has improved the front of his store
building and engaged Herman Tiedeman of Thorp as clerk. Eidsvold
– Born on Saturday, May 6 to Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Storey, a son.
75 Years Ago (1918) The marriage of Miss Edith S.
Benzschawel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Benzschawel of the Town of
Worden, and Mr. Andrew C. Heiman, of the Town of Thorp, was solemnized
at St. Bernard’s Church on Tuesday morning, May 21st. Neiman’s
Corner – P. Trybowski sold his farm recently. – Mrs. Frances Malecka,
who was ill for over a year, died of paralysis at her daughter’s home on
Thursday Morning. Anton Micke, Chas. Mortenson and W. J. Bivans
attended the cattle sale at Marshfield on Friday last. Mr. Bivans
purchased a purebred Holstein cow at the sale for $240. The
heirs of the E. A. Boardman estate have sold the greater part of the
same to Peter Papierniak, reserving one acre and the mill located
thereon. Mr. Papierniak has sold his twenty-acre farm to John
Daniels taking in trade the latter’s residence property and thirteen
acres of land north of the village limits. Wm. Krause and son
had eight head of purebred Holstein cattle consigned to the Central
Wisconsin Livestock Breeders sale at Marshfield. The sale was held
on Friday of last week. The total of the eight head is $2,030.00,
an average of $253.00 per head. 50 Years Ago (1943)
Masonic services were conducted at the Thorp Funeral Home at 2:00
o’clock Friday afternoon, May 21st, by Thorp Lodge No. 264, F & A.M.,
for William Wagner, 83, pioneer newspaperman, who passed away at his
home here on Tuesday morning, May 18, 1943 at 9:00 o’clock.
Mrs. Margaret Wolter (Fox), 82, a pioneer resident of the Town of
Longwood, died at the home of her daughter on May 19, 1943 after a short
illness. A telegram received Friday by Mr. and Mrs. Adam Wojt of
the Township of Withee announced the death of their son John 25, who was
killed in action on April 30, 1943 in the North African Battle.
Sergeant LeRoy James Kaczor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kaczor of Thorp,
and Miss Penny J. Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Williams of
Champaign, Illinois, were united in marriage in a ceremony performed by
Rev. Crowe at the Seminary of the Methodist Church in St. Louis, Mo.,
Wednesday afternoon, May 19th. Francis J. Conway and John A.
Papierniak of Thorp have purchased the old First National Bank building
on Bridge Street; it was announced today by the officers of the First
and Lumberman’s Bank. Worden – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Steve
Danielewicz a baby boy. Born to; Mr. and Mrs. James Biddle of
the Town of Thorp a son on Thursday evening May 13, 1943. He was
named James Allen. 25 Years Ago (1968)
Geralynn Wadzinski, 17, daughter of Thorp Mayor and Mrs. Frank Wadzinski
died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, on Sunday afternoon of a
possible brain hemorrhage. Pauline Nied, of the graduating class
of 1968, at Thorp High School, has been given the Annual award of the
Reader’s Digest Association for students who by their successful school
work give promise of attaining leadership in the community. At
Thorp High School’s Class Night, on May 18, Douglas Woodworth, the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Woodworth, received a $500.00 Scholarship from
the Wis. American Legion. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Stroinski are
the proud parents of a 7 lb. 2 oz. baby girl, Diane Marie, born at St.
Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield on Sat. May 18th. Robert
Cattanach Jr. has received an appointment to the U. S. Naval Academy at
Annapolis, MD. John Edward Pajak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Pajak, Thorp, has been appointed to the rank in the U. S. Navy of
Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class while serving aboard U.S.S. Simon Lake.
Walter F. Balicki, age 74, died May 6th at Covina, CA, a former resident
of Thorp, Chicago and lately of Covina, Calif. St. Mary’s
Catholic Church, Stanley was the setting for the marriage of Miss Jean
Carol Schultze and Leonard J. Gutowski on Sat. May 11. Gilman –
Word was received here of the birth of a daughter Rita Irene to Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Liazuk of Chicago, May 14th. Robert is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Stanley Liazuk. Jacob Kozial, 82, of Sheldon, passed
away at St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness. A Warrenville
man was killed and two others were injured critically early Sunday, May
5th. Richard L. Olichweir, 23, was hurt fatally when a car he was
a passenger in went out of control on River Road, near Bower School and
