100 Years Ago (1895)
23 lbs. loose Muscatel Raisings for $1.00 at the Boston Store.
Jones Tompkins, an old Clark County settler, died at his home near
Greenwood last week. Miss Nellis Gorman has returned to Oshkosh
where she has accepted a position in a millinery shop. A
daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Mat Storey of Eidsvold on Thurs. last.
Fire destroyed a large portion of the Village of Fairchild on Mon.
morning last, including Foster’s large store, etc. Loss $100,000
Geo. B. Parkhill, L. H. McGuire, Dr. P. McKittrick, Geo. Burke,
Jas. Conners, Jos. Lambert and several others are attending circuit
court at Neillsville this week. Ignatz Wojtkiewicz and Anton
Malinowski received a carload of merchandise on Mon. and have opened a
store at the latter’s residence near the old Lombard Depot site four
miles east of here. Geo. Burke reports the following real estate
deals during the past week; Chas. F. Grow to Ed. Sanders, Old Stangle
Place, $600; E. L. Waldron to Frank Neuman, 80 acres north of the
village, $7800; H. Banderob to Otto Dudonsky, lot 9, block 1, Collins
addition, $225. 75 Years Ago (1920)
Town Line – A little daughter is said to have arrived at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Wilfred Vanderhyden one day last week. John Valentine
sold his farm northeast of here to Joe Sheblak. Joe Maurerer,
who has been night operator at the Soo Depot for several months, was
transferred to Colfax last week and Leland P. Frindell now holds that
position here. The new residences of Stanley Manicki, John S.
Bogumill, Chas Herman, Jerry Asselin Sr. and Arthur Rasmussen are
approaching completion. All of them will be fully equipped with
modern conveniences. The new meat market building being erected
by O. A. Solvrud & Co. is nearly completed and the new plate glass front
is being put in this week. A large new power sausage machine is
also being added to the equipment. Nye, Lusk & Hudson Co. sold
their saw mill at Polley last week to the Gilman Manufacturing Co., of
Gilman. The sale includes mill and machinery and mill yards, also
several million feet of timber located about fourteen miles west of the
mill. Miss Katie Meyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Meyer and
Mr. Harry Heiting, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Heiting, both of the Town
of Reseburg were united in marriage at St. Bernard’s Church in this
village on Tuesday morning October 19. 50 Years Ago
(1945) Mrs. Hixon (Edna) Mead, 66, who has been
residing at Neillsville for several years past, died at the General
Hospital at Madison, Wed. morning, October 24th. Last rites were
conducted by Father Muckerheide at St. Bernard’s Church Sat. morning for
Henry Keller, 75, who passed away at the Owen Hospital, Oct. 17, 1945.
The death of Staff Sergeant Edward Papierniak, missing in action
since Feb. 23, 1944, has been declared as of Oct. 18, 1945, by the War
Department, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Papierniak. 25 Years Ago (1970)
Francis Conway received his 50 year pin from Gilbert Voelker, Chief
Ranger at St. Vincent’s Court 1338 Order of Foresters. St.
Hedwig’s Chapel, Thorp, was the scene for the marriage of Janet M.
Baldeschwiler and Robert F. Lesniewski on Saturday, September 19.
Thorp, Colby, Greenwood deadlocked for 1st place in the eastern division
of the Cloverbelt Conference after last Friday nights’ action and with a
week of the regular schedule football remaining, it looks like a
three-way tie for the division title coming up. 10 Years
Ago (1985) Clark County has been selected as the site
for a $3 million memorial to state Vietnam Veterans. The Wisconsin
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project board made the decision on Thurs. Oct
17 to locate the memorial at Moraine County Park, two (three) miles west
of Neillsville on US-10. Anna Meske, 84, Thorp, died Tues. Oct.
22, 1985, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls. Peter Latz,
923, died Wed. Oct. 16, 1985 at the Thorp Care Center.
