100 Years Ago (1895)
The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Brunner, aged one year and
four months, died on Sun. last. A. Albert, proprietor of the
creamery informs us that he is still operating his plant, and will
endeavor to continue to during (doing) so during the winter. The
following is a statement of the entire amount of taxes levied and to be
collected. The total value of all taxable property being
$77,879.00: State tax $252.66; County tax $668.82; County School tax
$383.13; School district tax $1,519.23; Highway and poll tax $276.75;
Overrun in roll $2.97. Total levy $3,753.56. $400 of the
license money having been appropriated last July by the village board
towards payment of the State loan leaves the total amount to be
collected but $3,353.56. 75 Years Ago (1920)
Butlerville – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shoemaker on Dec. 7th a
son. – Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Kile Jr. on Dec. 5th, a son. A
son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thiel, Jr., of the Town of Reseburg
on Tuesday, December 14th. H. E. Howard has moved his barber
shop and pool room outfit to the Soo Hotel building, occupying the room
recently vacated by the Solvrud & Co. Meat Market. Mr. Rheinold
Daniels and Miss Ida Zimmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmer, of
the Town of Reseburg were united in marriage at the residence of Rev.
Staple, who performed the ceremony, in this village on Tues. Dec. 14th.
Frank Sniegowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Sniegowski, of the Town
of Reseburg, died at his home on Friday morning last. The lad was
fourteen years of age. 50 Years Ago (1945)
Arnold John, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilferd G. Vanderhyden, born
Sun., Dec. 9th, died at the Stanley Hospital on Monday evening.
In a simple ceremony Sat. at 11 a.m. in the rectory of St. Raphael’s
Church, Miss Ruth Marie Kulig, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Albert H. Kulig,
of Thorp, was married to Frederick Outland Pond, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Bailey Pond, of Suffolk, VA. Albert Stackiewicz, 77, who
had been making his home with Mr. and Mrs. John Romanowicz in the Town
of Reseburg, passed away at the Stanley Hospital on Tues. Dec. 4, 1945.
Miss Laura Hansen, daughter of Mr. Harry O. Hansen, of Reseburg and
Albert Edward Jensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jensen were united in
marriage, Sat. Dec. 8th at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Reseburg,
the Rev. Sprengler, officiating. Roger-Creek – A daughter was
born to Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Rommer, of New York, on Dec. 1. Mrs.
Rommer was the former Lenore McCaffery. Taft – A son was born to
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Skaleski, Fri. in Victory Hospital at Stanley.
Mr. and Mrs. Adam Pawlak of Thorp bought a 40 acre farm from Mr. and
Mrs. Mark Depa on 73 at the corner of the county line, better known as
the Adolph Burzynski farm. Neiman’s Corner – Word was received
here that a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Mamajek in Pittsburgh,
Penn. 25 Years Ago (1970) The milk
house on the Ed Freese farm, a mile north and a ˝ mile west of Eidsvold
was destroyed by fire Sunday evening. Fran Harycki, owner of
Harycki Jewelry is having his Grand Opening this week, Fri. and Sat.
Mrs. Sarah Schauer is the proud grandmother of a 6 pound 7 ounce
baby girl born Sun. Dec. 6th to Mr. and Mrs. David Schauer of St. Louis,
Missouri. Mrs. Mable Lee, 86, a longtime residence (resident) of
Stanley died Thurs. evening at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
Graveside services were held Monday for Scott Allen Diamond, infant son
of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Diamond of Route 2, Gilman. Baby Diamond
passed away Sat. evening at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
Teofil Piwoni, 82, Athens, and formerly of Gilman, died at the Memorial
Hospital at Medford, Sun. Dec. 6. 10 Years Ago (1985)
Word was received that Tom Qualle, 50, former Thorp
resident, now of Arizona, passed away suddenly of a massive coronary in
Tokyo, Japan. A son Adam Evan Elkins was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Mike Elkins, formerly of Thorp, Dec. 6, 1985. He weighed 8 lbs. 13
˝ oz and was 21 inches long. Grandmother is Mrs. Shirley Elkins,
formerly of Thorp. William Petranovich, Glenwood City, died Sun.
Dec. 8, 1985 at United Hospital, St. Paul, MN, after a brief illness.
