100 Years Ago (1896)
Peter Deforth has gone to Owen’s Mill near Withee where he will
practice his profession as general blacksmith for the John S. Owen
Lumber Co. Ignatz Woitkewicz and Miss Lizzie Malinowski were
united in marriage by Rev. Jachiniak, at the residence of Anton
Malinowski, near Lombard, on Wed. of last week. The finishing
touches are being put on the $4,000 iron bridge across Black River in
the Town of Hixon. The approaches will be completed in the spring.
This bridge will be a great convenience for traffic along the line.
Gormley Bros. who have two camps north of this village, have banked
5,500,000 feet of logs up to date this season and are still rolling them
in at the rate of 130,000 per day. 4,000,000 of this is hemlock,
the balance pine. They have also hauled to the N. W. Lumber Co.
track 1,000 cords of tan bark. The logs are being banked on the North
Fork of the Eau Claire for the N.W.C. Co. and will be manufactured into
lumber at Eau Claire. 75 Years Ago (1921)
Bobb’s Mill – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Arciszewski on
Feb. 11. – Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schott are the proud parents of a baby
boy which was born on Feb. 19th. At the annual meeting of the
Big Four Canning Co. held at Stanley last week the following directors
were elected: F. A. Lange, H. T. Lanae, L. I. Roe, Chas. Nelson, F. W.
Fischer, R. C. Lange and Norman Roe. 50 Years Ago (1946)
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Budzinski, Fri. Feb. 15th.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric Larson, of Withee, are the proud parents of a
daughter, Sharon Ann, born Feb. 7th at the Stanley Hospital. A
very lovely double-ring wedding ceremony was performed when Miss Marion
Micke, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Micke, of this village
became the bride of Francis Culbert, son of Mrs. Ann Culbert, of
Chippewa Falls, on Thurs. Feb. 14, 1946, Valentine’s Day, at St.
Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp. Gilman – A baby girl was born
to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Rademaker, Sun. morning. Yellow River – A
daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Olson, Feb. 9th at their home
here. 25 Years Ago (1971) A son, Jerry
James, weighing 9 lb. 5 oz., 20 ½ inches long, was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Jerry Buss of Rockford, Ill. on Jan. 29, 1971 at Rockford Memorial
Hospital. Ann Neis, age 6, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Neis,
of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on Feb. 11th. Norbert
Kolodziej, 36, Eau Claire, passed away Fri. Feb. 5th at Sacred Heart
Hospital. Funeral Services were held Tues. at St. Hedwig’s
Chapel on Mon. Feb. 8th, for Louis P. Gulcynski, 58, who passed away
Feb. 4, 1971. Funeral services were held Tues. at St. John’s
Lutheran Church, Withee, for Mrs. Clara Zasoba, 84, of Withee, who died
Sun. morning of an apparent heart attack. Reseburg – Born to Mr.
and Mrs. Julian Slowiak, a baby boy on Feb. 7 at the Victory Memorial
Hospital. 10 Years Ago (1986) William
Zagorski, 86, Withee, former City of Thorp employee died Sun. Feb. 16,
1986. Tom Smasal, Sec-Treas. of the Thorp Lions Club presented a
$100 check to Fire Department President, Bernie Stuttgen and Thorp Fire
Chief Ray Stroinski, Mon. Feb. 17. John “Jack” Dallas, 84,
Thorp, died Tues. evening, Feb.11, 1986 at the Victory Memorial
Hospital, Stanley. Maryanna Wisz, 85, died Feb. 13, 1986 at
Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. Services for Everett P.
Skroch, 74, Neillsville, a local attorney who was dead on arrival at
Memorial Hospital, Thurs. Feb. 13, 1986, were held Sat. Feb 15 at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church, Neillsville. John Jarocki, a graduate of
Thorp High School, recently was installed as President of the L. E.
Phillips Career Development Center in Eau Claire. Holly
Szymanski, daughter of Richard and Elaine Szymanski of Thorp, has been
named as National Award Winner by the United States Achievement Academy.
