100 Years Ago (1896)
Dr. Selden reports a new daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. C. Banderob on
Saturday last. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Colby on
Thursday last; Dr. McCutcheon attending physician. Benjamin
Stephens Lockwood, who has been ill for several months died at his
residence in this village on Thurs. morning last, aged forty years.
John Micke of Kaukauna purchased Zeph Worden’s farm on Mon. last for
$1,875.00. The creamery was forced to suspend operations a few
days ago on account of impure cream gathered from patrons who as yet
have not learned that looks are entirely foreign in the making of good
butter, and consequently makes the product unsaleable at any price.
The creamery will be started again in a few days and it is hoped that
none but the June article in the cream line will be delivered to the
drivers. 75 Years Ago (1921) Reseburg
– Reinhold Daniels moved onto his farm last Sat. Lombard – Born
to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jarocki twins, a boy and girl. John Wagner,
78, died after a two week’s illness of bronchitis at his home in the
Town of Reseburg, Thurs. morning, April 28th. Roy Brown and
family who have been located on a small farm near Harlingen, Texas, for
nearly two years past arrived here on Wed. evening last to remain during
the summer, having leased their farm in Texas to other parties.
The trip from Texas was made with an Oakland automobile with a trailer
attached for carrying necessary camping outfit, etc. The
congregation of Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Eidsvold treated Mr. and
Mrs. John Englebretson to a surprise party May 1, 1921 in honor of the
25th anniversary of their wedding day. Mr. and Mrs. John are
residing on a nice farm south of the Village of Thorp.
50 Years Ago (1946) Miss Charlotte Doege, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Doege, Sr., of Reseburg and Max Siemek, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Sam Siemek, of Lublin, were married at two o’clock Sat.
afternoon, May 4, 1946 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at
Reseburg, Rev. W. Schedler performed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Szatalowicz wish to announce the marriage of their son Marion to
Miss Helen Greb, of Manhattan, Kansas. Joseph Pazdur of Thorp
and Dorothy Pearson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pearson, of St.
Paul, were united in marriage in a ceremony performed by Rev. Kamla at
St. Mary’s (Czestochowa) Church, Junction, Sat. morning April 27.
A double wedding took place at the United Lutheran Parsonage at
Greenwood on Wed. May 1st, when Rev. Norson joined in the holy wedlock,
Milton D. Seaman, son of Mrs. Arthur Seaman, of Thorp and Miss Bertha M.
Nisula and George W. Wnukowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wnukowski, of
Withee and Esther Nisula. The brides are the daughters of Mr. and
Mrs. John Nisula of Greenwood. Gilman – A baby girl was born to
Mr. and Mrs. Wed Gay Mon. at the Victory Hospital in Stanley.
Northwest Thorp – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph DeRouin, of
Redwing, Minn. St. Ann’s Church in Stanley, Sat. morning April
27th Miss Colleen Baldeschwiler became the bride of Dale Heckler of
Celina, Ohio; Rev. Pitzenberger performed the ceremony.
25 Years Ago (1971) Funeral services were conducted
Mon. for Leroy Metcalf, 69, route 3, Greenwood, chairman of the Town of
Reseburg, who was killed Thurs. in a tractor accident on his farm.
William J. Urban, 77, passed away at Colonial Nursing Home, Colby, on
Sun. May 2nd. Miss Linda Wigstadt, 28, Dorchester and well-known
in Thorp having bowled the past five years with the Sky Club women’s
team, died instantly in a traffic accident in Marshfield just before
7:00 a.m. Wed. April 28. Wet snow on the roadway is blamed for the
collision which demolished both cars. On Fri. April 23,
Mr. Lyle Christensen and wife, Ann, of Thorp with 30 members of the
Clark County Male Chorus and their wives journeyed to Milwaukee to
participate in the 1971 International “Big Sing”. The “Sing” was
held in Uihlein Hall of the Performing Arts Center. Reigning
over this year’s Prom Festivities will be King, Joe Skibinski, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Skibinski and Queen, Cindy Moskiewicz, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Moskiewicz. Bobb’s Mill – Mr. and Mrs. Billie
Buss moved last week to their new home which that had recently purchased
from Joe Piwoni. Fred Eggerth, 77, former resident of the Town
of Taft, died at the Augusta Nursing Home, Thurs. evening.
10 Years Ago (1986) Raymond Nedza, 52, Route 3,
Greenwood, died Sat. May 3, 1986 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
Gerald William Huberty, 39, former Thorp resident, died Sun. May 4,
1986 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley from a lingering illness.
Alfred Fred Brenner, 90, former Cadott resident, died at St.
Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls on Wed. April 30, 1986. Thorp
area residents recall shopping at the small Pabich’s Market on N.
Washington St. for many years before the new supermarket was built. The
historic building was torn down last week after sitting vacant for a
number of years. One year ago at this time something happened
that moved many people of the Thorp area. A humble, sincere
gentleman named Carl Herzak, who had adopted the City of Thorp as his
home for the rest of his life, died suddenly. His death was
shocking because it occurred as he was assisting the coaching of the
high school girl’s softball team, a group which he affectionately
referred to as “his girls”. Butler – Tues. April 29 was a proud
and happy (day) for Rodney and Peggy Martens, their son, Jarred Scott
was born at 1:45 p.m. He weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz. he was 21 ½ inches
long. Gilman – Congratulations to Pat and Nora Wood, who are the
parents of a baby girl, Sara Elaine. Congratulations to Gene and
Pat Stigen on their new grandchild, Savanah, born on Tues. last to Larry
and Lori Stigen at Sacred Heart Hospital at Eau Clarie. Edith M.
Zimmerman, 58, Stanley, died Thurs. May 1, 1986, at Victory Memorial
Hospital, Stanley. St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Mosinee, was the
setting for the marriage of Lia Marie Jensen, Mosinee and Gary R.
Zurakowski, Mosinee, on Sat. April 26, 1986.
