100 Years Ago (1896)
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Murphy on Sun. last. E.
A. Boardman has his grist mill in running order and is manufacturing
flour for all comers. A. O. Rhea has purchased the 40 acres of
land adjoining his present home on the west of Mrs. Leroy Graves for
$800. S. Marcinkowski, 21, was instantly killed by a
falling tree while engaged in chopping on his father’s farm in the Town
of Withee on Wed. evening of last week. About ten inches of snow
fell on Mon. and winter seems to have set in, in earnest.
75 Years Ago (1921) Plainview – A son was born to Mr.
and Mrs. E. E. Carver Oct. 31. Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Heiting on Mon. a son. – Andrew Kern, 55, a bachelor, committed
suicide by shooting himself at the Hammerle farm home on Mon.
Sophie Wolcules, 51, died Wed. Nov. 2nd, 1921 at St. Joseph Hospital,
Chippewa Falls, after a serious operation. Eidsvold – Nels
Godfredson who purchased the P. Peterson farm moved there the first of
last week. Doris Mosher, who attends Stevens Point normal
school, spent the latter part of last week here with her parents.
A window in the Johnson & Hansman Hardware Store front was smashed
during Wed. night of last week and a rifle taken. John Budzinski
and George Klak who are attending college at Ripon visited with their
parents here over Sat. Miss Leona David, who has been employed
as compositor at this office for nearly three years past quit her
position on Sat. last in order to take up more serious duties in the
near future. Miss Ann Papierniak now handles the “stick” and is
making good progress. Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Springer recently
purchased the general stock of merchandise from Mr. F. Plucinski who
established the “Blue Store” some fifteen years ago and will continue
the business at the old stand. 50 Years Ago (1946)
Fremont Wonn, 62, passed away very suddenly at his home at
Stanley, Sat. afternoon from a heart attack. He had driven down
town in his car and ordered coal, a little after noon, and returned to
his home. When the driver of the coal truck delivered the coal,
about a half hour later he found Mr. Wonn dead. A daughter was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Izydorek of this village at the Marshfield
Hospital on Mon. Oct. 11th. Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Slowiak a
baby boy on Fri. Nov. 1st at the Victory Hospital at Stanley.
25 Years Ago (1971) Two young men were sentenced by
Judge Peter Seidl in Medford County Court Friday in connection with
burglaries alleged to have occurred in the Kapsy Market and Gamble Store
in Gilman last month. Army private first class John R. Olson,
son of Reverend and Mrs. R. W. Olson, Thorp, recently was awarded the
expert infantryman badge while serving with the 171st Infantry Brigade
at Fort Wainwrith, Alaska. Miss Bonnie A. Czech, a freshman at
the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, has been chosen as a little
sister to Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity on the campus. Mr. and Mrs.
Mike Stachnik announce the arrival of a new grandson, Chad Michael.
Sergeant and Mrs. John Obermann Jr., Rapid City, South Dakota, are the
proud parents. Navy Seaman Apprentice Jerome D. Teclaw, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Malen L. Teclaw, Thorp, has graduated from recruit training
of the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif. A golden wedding
anniversary celebration was held on Sept. 25th at the American Legion
Hall, Thorp in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kostick Sr., of Conrath.
Four Corners – A five pound six ounce baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Dan Schmidt of Gilman at Victory Memorial Hospital on Fri. Oct. 22nd.
Miss Jean Marie Halida and Michael Paul Gustafson exchanged
marriage vows Sat. Sept. 25, at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic
Church, Lublin. Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward (Bob)
Alger, a baby boy on Oct. 31. They named him Kevin James.
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kuester a baby girl on Oct. 31st.
Henry G. Trybula, 64, died of a heart attack Tues. morning at his home.
Michael Streit Sr. died suddenly Thurs. at his home.
10 Years Ago (1986) Two Thorp men died Sat. Nov. 8,
when the truck they were riding in rolled over off STH 73 in Rusk
County. One Thorp man was seriously injured. Richard Leonard
27, and Thomas Romanowski, 24, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Sally Hucker, 77, Thorp, died Sun. Nov. 9, 1986. Violet Hagen,
78, Cornell, died Sat. Nov. 8, 1986 at Golden Age Home, Chippewa Falls.
Imbert S. Roe, 89, Stanley, died Sun. Nov. 9, 1986 at Luther
Hospital, Eau Clarie. Glen and Linnae Seaman of Amery are the
proud parents of a baby girl, born Sat. Nov. 8th, weighing 10 lbs. 3 ˝
oz, 22 inches tall and was named Addie Lynn. Sat. Oct. 25, 1986,
a daughter, Melinda Ann, was born to Eugene and Brenda Czubakowski,
Thorp. Tues. Oct. 28, 2986 (1986), a son Jeremy David was born
to David and Lori Jensen, Thorp.
