100 Years Ago (1896)
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Kuehl, of the Town of Worden on
the 15th inst. Fred Bork has purchased the eighty acres directly
north of his present farm of T. Oesan last week. Henry Micke
purchased the farm of Erick Ohman, being the east ½ of the northwest
quarter, section 1-28-4, last week paying $1,600 for the same. A
boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Peter McPharland on Fri. last. Miss
Minnie Banderob, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Banderob and Mr. Joseph
Klauck were united in marriage at the Catholic parsonage in this village
by Rev. Capelian on Wed. of last week. Geo. Alger’s dwelling
house located in the extreme western part of the village burned to the
ground on Fri. night last. The fires was discovered about 11
o’clock but had gained too much headway to save the building.
75 Years Ago (1921) Thorp High School news: The

Isn’t it nice to be on time? Bob Childs, Garfield Borowick (3),
Alex Zakrzewicz, Ray Andrews (2), Herbert Roix, Bill Aucutt, Kenneth
Lindquist, James Tolford, Stanley Zielanis, Leon Zielanis, John
Kurtinaitis, Sally Phillips. About six inches of snow fell last
week which makes fine sleighing at present. Emmett McCarthy who
has been in Uncle Sam’s navy the past year, received his discharge and
arrived at the home of his parents here last week. 50
Years Ago (1946) Miss Vonnie Jean Pitt, a 1946 graduate
of the Thorp High School, now employed at the local Ben Franklin Store,
is the first lady to fly an airplane solo locally in Thorp. She is
the proud owner of a C. A. A. flying license, solo certificate and has
her silver wings. Edward Staron, 21, son of Joseph Staron of
Thorp, has been selected for training in the Naval Reserve Officer
Training Corps at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.
Lone Oak – Mr. and Mrs. Ed Miller have purchased a cheese factory near
Marshfield. Breezy Hill – Mr. and Mrs. John Miller received an
announcement of a baby boy born to their daughter, Elizabeth, now Mr.
Edwin Rixford, of Triump, Minn. Butler – A son, Emil Rodger was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Reineke Dec. 21st at the Victory Hospital,
Stanley. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Heiman, of Milwaukee
on Mon. Dec. 23rd. 25 Years Ago (1971)
Mrs. Wally C. Stroinski, 76, passed away at the Stanley Hospital of a
lingering illness on Mon. Dec. 13th. Call to order of the
Fortieth Anniversary of the Thorp Lions Club was made at the Thorp
Legion Hall on Sat. by President LeRoy Merlak with the invocation given
by Lion Father Brockman. Pfc. Larry E. Luzinski, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Anton Luzinski, Lublin, recently completed the Wheeled Tractor
Operators course at the Engineering Training Center at Fort Leonard
Wood, Missouri on July 23, 1971 and graduated from there on Sept. 24,
1971. Sophie Jaskot, 88, died on Wed. Dec. 8, at Victory
Memorial Hospital. White Birch – Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Chura
received word that their daughter, Captain Virginia, arrived in the
states after 27 months in Japan where she was stationed at Yokata Air
Base. Bobb’s Mill – A daughter was born on Nov. 24th to Mr. and
Mrs. Obrycki in the Stanley Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Offord
are great-grandparents. Lone Oak – Mr. and Mrs. Harry Baehr have
another great grandchild. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Arnold Wintz of St. Paul, Minn. Mrs. Wintz is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Alger of St. Paul. 10 Years Ago (1986)
Albin A. Kurtinaitis, 81, Neillsville, formerly of the
Withee and Thorp area, died Fri. Dec. 19, 1986 at the Memorial Nursing
Home in Neillsville. Harriet M. Anderson, 77, Hudson, Wis.,
former Thorp teacher, died suddenly Dec. 20, 1986 in the emergency room
of Hudson Memorial Hospital. Michael C. Briski, 64, route 3,
Greenwood, Town of Reseburg, died Fri. Dec. 19, 1986 at his home.
Shari Lee Slobodnik, daughter of Larry and Carol Slobodnik, Withee,
exchanged marriage vows with Michael Frank Dobrzynski, Green Bay, son of
Ben and Stephie Dobrzynski, Withee, on Sat. Dec. 6, 1986 at Nazareth
Lutheran Church, Withee. Thorp High School boys’ basketball
head coach Jack Tetzner, reached a coaching milestone at Neillsville
Fri. Dec. 19. But the victory was special for the 38 year coaching
veteran for more than one reason. Tetzner celebrated his birthday Sun.
Dec. 21 and the team gave him some special presents. For one, it
was Tetzner’s 500th career win as a high school head coach, a feat
accomplished by only two other Wisconsin Coaches. Melanie
Rickard and Scott Rusch exchanged vows at the United Methodist Church,
Wisconsin Dells.
