100 Years Ago (1897)

Still no sleighing!
 
Two more carloads of basswood lumber were loaded in Nye, Lusk & Hudson’s yards last week for export each board being stamped.
 
Philip Mattes and bride returned from Calumet County on Mon.  Philip having committed matrimony with a young lady named Clara Best during a week’s absence.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Neiman’s Corner – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Piwoni.
 
A nine pound boy arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Fischer on Wed. Jan. 4th.
 
Ruth, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Roth, died at their home in International Falls, Minn. on Fri. Jan. 6th.  She was six months old.
 
The invincible Thorp City team added to their long list of victories – their greatest – the defeat of the Denver Athletic basketball five (Rocky Mountain Champions) of Denver, Colo., who won fourteen straight games before striking Thorp on Tues. evening last.  The Denver Five are by far; the best team which ever played on this floor, and will no doubt travel a long way, and play many crack teams before they lose another game.
 
On Tuesday, Emery W. Crosby took the oath of office and assumed the duties of Judge of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit.  Miss Hazel Lee, a long time stenographer in his law office, will be Court Reporter and will do most of the court reporting in Clark County.  Harland Kintzele will be assistant Court Reporter and will do the work in the sessions held in Jackson, Juneau and Sauk Counties.
 
On Thurs. Dec. 29, 1921 at Eau Clarie, Miss Lillian L. Mars became the bride of Mr. Vernon L. Jackson.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Clarence Weed at the Lake St. Methodist parsonage and took place at high noon.
 
50 years Ago (1947)
 
Thomas G. Telford, 80, died at his home in Gillett, Wis., on Tues. morning, after a lingering illness.  He was born in Canada in 1867 and came to Wis. when a small boy, settling in Clark County until 1889, when he went to Oconto County where he worked in the woods and was a carpenter by trade.
 
Charles Holowinski, formerly of the Town of Taft, died at St. Michael’s Hospital at Stevens Point Thurs. morning.
 
A very pretty wedding took place at the Rev. Irish parsonage in Thorp on Sat. Jan. 4, 1947, when Vera Cornwell and Wallace Kuehl were joined in holy bonds of matrimony in a double ring ceremony.
 
Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Anyzewski received a telegram last Thurs. informing them of the arrival of twin daughters, Julie Mary, weighing five pounds and three ounces and Jacqueline Mary, weighing five pounds and seven and one-half ounces, to Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Hottmann at St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison, on Thurs. Jan. 9.  Mrs. Hottmann will be better remembered as Miss Alice Anyzewski.
 
Neiman’s Corner – Word was received here that a baby girl, Gayle Anne, weighing seven pounds and eight ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Seygiel in Chicago on Dec. 31, 1946.
 
25 years Ago (1972)
 
Betty Ringelspaugh (Claussen), Tomah, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard C. Claussen, Thorp, was among the graduates at ceremonies held at Stout State University Dec. 23.  Mrs. Ringelspaugh majored in Home Economics education.
 
Charles W. Schmidt began his postal career as a clerk at the Thorp Post Office on Oct. 1, 1933.  He was promoted to Assistant Postmaster on Jan. 1, 1944.  He served in that position until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1971.
 
Amelia Ann Skora was born to Adam and Kathleen Skora of Greenwood Jan. 8 at (Memorial) Hospital in Neillsville.
 
Maxine Wellner, 59, resident of rural Thorp, passed away Tues. Jan 4, 1972, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
Mrs. Richard (Herdis) Nielsen, 71, a lifelong resident of the Withee area, died Sun. at Lake Forest, Ill., where she had been visiting.
 
Breezy Hill – Bruce Seaman called his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Seaman, last week and informed that the he is well and in Spain.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
The former headquarters of the ITT Life Insurance Corp. and former home office of Thorp Finance Corp. will stand empty no longer.  George Olishkewych, owner of GO Industries, a garment manufacturer currently located in Neillsville, has purchased the main building.
 
Della Wisniewski, 81, resident of the Thorp Care Center, died at Victory Memorial Hospital, Sun. Jan. 11, 1987.
 
Services were held Dec. 20, 1986, at Roseberrys Funeral Home, Friendship, for former Thorp resident, Roy Clarence Williams, 69, who died of cancer on Dec. 17 at his home in Friendship.
 
Jean Margaret Werla and Jeffrey James Rosemeyer were united in marriage on Dec. 5, 1986, at St. Stanislaus, Stevens Point, Wis.
