100 Years Ago (1897)
The bear didn’t get a glimpse of his shadow. Jas. Timlin
purchased the farm of Jos. Flora near Eidsvold, last week. E. A.
Boardman purchased Thos. Biddle’s dwelling house and lot on Tues.
Haul in your plugged logs. The X-ray will give proper credit where
it is due. The Chapel car “Glad Tidings” has been side-tracked here for
several days and meetings are held every afternoon and evening.
Timber stealing has been carried on to such an extent for several years
past in this vicinity that many of the most ignorant class have looked
upon it as a privilege which they ought to enjoy without interference
even from its rightful owners. Stanley Sunbeams – On Fri. Jan.
22, Peter Pinter’s Blacksmith Shop was burned to the ground as the
result of a defective chimney. The family of Peter Pinter which
dwelt in the upper part of the building and retired for the night had
barely time enough to save their self from the flames. – Over 2,000
cords of basswood bolts have been received here by the Stanley Mfg. Co.
during the past two weeks. 75 Years Ago (1922)
Jolly Corner – A yearly meeting was held at the Timothy Belt Cheese
Factory. The following officers were elected: Pres. Herman Dudansky;
Vice. Pres. Henry Jacque; Secretary, A. L. Truckey; Treasurer, Jos.
Osowski. Ignatz Szymanski was taken to the hospital at Chippewa
Falls on Sat. last as a result of a fall from a load of straw.
The Mask Ball given at the Thorp Opera House on Fri. evening last was
very largely attended and much enjoyed by all. Thorp High School
Notes – Our local high school team defeated the Gilman High School last
Sat. evening by a score of 32 to 18. The line-up was as follows:

50 Years Ago (1947) Miss Grace Turenne, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Albert Turenne, of Thorp, became the bride of George Lobacz,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Lobacz, of Greenwood, Jan. 30 at St.
Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp. Rev. Muckerheide officiated. A
daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Zarada on Fri. morning, Jan. 31, at
the Victory Hospital at Stanley. A daughter was born to Mr. and
Mrs. Louis Pagel, Jr., on Mon. evening, Feb. 3 at the Victory Hospital
at Stanley. George B. Parkhill, 88, who practiced law in Thorp
for thirty years, passed away Feb. 1, 1947, at Galesville, WI where he
had made his home with his son, since 1944. Gertrude (Nieminen)
Kasken was born Sept. 4, 1914, on the farm 2 miles south of Clark in the
Town of Hixon. She passed away in her sleep the night of Jan. 27, 1947.
25 Years Ago (1972) Andrew Stasila, 87,
passed away Wed. morning at the Colby Nursing Home. Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth Wampole are the proud parents of a son, Patrick Alan, born on
Wed. Dec. 29, 1971 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. He
weighed in at 7 lbs. 12 oz. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Hodorowski, Sr., Thorp and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wampole, Fairchild.
William McParland, 50 year member of the Thorp Masonic Lodge, passed
away Dec. 2, 1971 at Milwaukee. Four Corner – A 7 lb. 11 ½ oz.
baby boy was born on Jan. 23rd to Mr. and Mrs. Roger C. Kell of Withee.
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Malinowski of Stanley, a baby
girl on Jan. 29th. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Malinowski are the
grandparents. Joseph Martin Trubac, 83, resident of Route 2,
Thorp, passed away at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley Jan. 31.
Vilas S. Nowicki, formerly of the Cobban Block, Chippewa Falls, passed
away at the University Hospital at Madison, Jan. 28. 10
Years Ago (1987) Catherine Nowobielski, 95, resident of
the Thorp Care Center, died Sat. Jan. 31, 1987 at Victory Memorial
Hospital, Stanley. Sr. Regis Maier (Anna) 94, passed away Jan.
21, 1987 at Assisi Heights St. Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee.
John Tokarz, 78, Gilman, died Fri. morning, Jan. 30, 1987, at Memorial
Hospital, Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Al Granacki of McHenry, Ill.
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass and renewal of
their vows at St. John’s the Baptist Church, Johnsburg, Ill.
Gilman – Anna Micke received word that her daughter, Phyllis Ann Klein
of Coon Rapids, MN earned her BA Degree in Nursing. She graduated
from the Metropolitan State University, St. Paul. Former Thorp
resident John F. Klouda has been promoted to engineering product manager
in a section of the Commercial Systems Group; of the Trane Company in La
Crosse.
