100 Years Ago (1897)
Frank Switalski, who has been operating a shoe shop here for several
months, departed on Tues. with his family for Globeville, Colorado,
where he intends locating permanently. Jos. Klouda, an expert
workman, will continue the business at the old stand. Theodore
J. Cirkel, 26 years, youngest son of Mrs. J. W. Cirkel, of Boyd, died at
a hotel in Minneapolis where he was boarding on Friday afternoon last.
Mr. Cirkel was for several years a resident of this village being
interested in the stave plant owned by his father and brothers.
Discouraged, tired of life, Theodore, an attendant of the law department
of Minnesota University, ended his existence by putting a bullet through
his heart at the Waverly Hotel, Minneapolis. John P. Ziehr,
about 17 years, who was injured while at work at the Cirkel Mfg Co.
factory about three weeks ago, died as a result of his injuries on Sun.
afternoon last. 75 Years Ago (1922)
Town Line Topics – At a cheese meeting held at the Henderson home Feb.
13th it was decided to start a factory at that point with Lee Henderson
as cheesemaker, Wm. Jordan was elected president, B. G. Splinter,
secretary and Lee Henderson, treasurer and salesman. The
management expects to have the factory ready for operation about April
1st. Jump River is to have a cheese factory, to be opened for
business March 1st. Melvin Parkhill and family moved to
Marshfield on Sat. last where Mr. Parkhill holds a good position with
the Kraft Bros. Cheese Co. The farm residence of Alex Langiewicz
in the Town of Withee was destroyed by fire at an early hour on Tues.
morning. Report says that Herman Stracker, who moved to Modesto,
Calif. about two years ago, has been ill for some time past and will
return to Wisconsin as soon as his health will permit. It seems
that the climate does not agree with Mr. Stracker’s former robust
constitution, hence the necessary change, 25 years later Mr. Stracker is
still in Calif. and going strong. Jos. J. Pawlak purchased the
two lots recently acquired by Paul Glowacki, located between the Odd
Fellows building and the Thorp Auto Sales Co. from the later last week
and will erect a large store building and warehouse thereon as soon as
spring opens. Mr. Pawlak will start a hardware business when the
buildings are complete. The marriage of Miss Dorothy Bogumill,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bogumill, and Mr. Sylvester Krakowiecki
took place at St. Hedwig’s Church on Tues. morning, Feb. 21st. The
ceremony was performed by Rev. Stanley A. Krakowiecki, of Necedah,
brother of the groom. 50 Years Ago (1947)
Edward Kmieciak, 33, was found dead in the field near his home, in the
Town of Thorp, on Wed. morning, Feb. 19. Donna Mae Tallman,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyall Tallman, of Gilman, became the bride of
Dale W. Panetti, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Panetti, of Jump River, in a
double ring ceremony performed at the Presbyterian Church at Gilman,
Feb. 15th. Luelyn Cecilia, an eight and one-half pound baby girl
was born to Mr. and Mrs. George F. Schmidt, of Reseburg on Feb. 20th.
A baby girl, Dorothy Helen, weighing 7 pounds and 12 ounces, was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Jasinek, JR., at the Victory Hospital at
Stanley on Thurs. Feb. 6, 1947. 25 Years Ago (1972)
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Zuelke of Wausau a
baby girl, Tammy Sue, on Feb. 20th. Proud grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Reuben Rossman. – Gertrude Barth received another great grandchild
on Feb. 17th, as a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Barth Jr.
of Stanley. The Thorp Cardinals won another thriller against the
Owen-Withee Blackhawks in the first game of tournaments at Abbotsford.
10 Years Ago (1987) After nearly 30 years
of service to the people of Thorp at the People’s Exchange Bank, Don
Seaholm is retiring, effective the end of this month. Don came to
Thorp in 1957, joining the bank as Cashier. Former Thorp
resident, Lillian Balcer, 82, of Wausau, died Tues. Feb. 17, 1987 in a
Wausau nursing home. Pauline Flammang of Chicago died Wed., Feb.
4, 1987. She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Teresa Pecka.
Laura Lee, daughter of Ron and Kay Cerven was baptized Sun., Feb.
22, 1987 by Father John Puerner. The Thorp High School boys’
basketball team did what they had to do during the last week of the
regular season. How-ever, some other teams did not do their part,
and the Cards had to settle for sole possession of second place instead
of a tie for first. Lublin – We received word that Mr. and Mrs.
Duane Gwiazdon of Minneapolis are rejoicing over the birth of a
daughter, Danille Maxine, Jan. 16, 1987. She weighed 8 lbs. 8 oz.
