100 Years Ago (1897)
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Goss on Thursday last. A
daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ole Christianson on Sat. last.
A bill for the formation of the new county of Rivers was killed by
adverse action by the committee on town and county organization in the
assembly last week. The Courier office turned out 23,400
election tickets for surrounding towns and villages. Opposition
candidates were not as plentiful as usual but the ticket business was
quite good just the same. A boy was born to Mr. and Mars. Andrew
Brunner on Wed. Eidsvold – Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Baker on
March 28, a son. – The log drive on the North Fork River is well under
way, having already passed below the rapids dam. There is plenty
of water and a short drive is expected. 75 Years Ago
(1922) Worden – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Casper Haas Tues. March 28th. Field School Corner – A daughter
was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Malinon Sun. March 26th. Town Line
– J. C. Banfield and J. A. Toomey are exchanging residences this week.
Mr. Banfield goes on the farm he purchased of Mat Toomey and Mr. Toomey
goes back on his own farm. Members of Cecil Tormey Post No. 118
of the American Legion who have made applications to the State
Vocational Board for instruction in music will hold their first meeting
at the Village Hall on Sat. evening, April 8th for the purpose of
organizing a Legion Band which will be under the leadership of Prof.
Theo. Steinmetz of Eau Claire. 50 Years Ago (1947)
Butler – A son was born April 2nd to Mr. and Mrs. Lester
Reineke, of Augusta at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. – Word
was received here that a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Audorff, of
Cornell. Ernest was a Butler boy. Miss Maybel Rasmussen,
daughter of Arthur Rasmussen of Ladysmith, became the bride of Earl
Tieman, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tieman, Sr., of Stanley in a
ceremony performed by Rev. Midtlien at Our Savior’s Lutheran Parsonage,
Sat. afternoon March 15 at Stanley. Harold L. Mason, Thorp,
Route 3, who enlisted on June 19, 1945, and entered active service at
Milwaukee on that date, received his discharge papers from the
separation center located at Fort Sheridan, Ill. on Feb. 16, 1947.
Andrew Nawrocki, of Chicago, purchased the Vincent Lato 80 acre farm, 6
miles south of Thorp, recently and took possession of same. Mr.
and Mrs. Leland Albert are the happy parents of an 8 pound 10 ounce baby
boy Fri. April 4th at the Stanley Hospital. Born: to Mr. and
Mrs. Larry Arsenault, Easter Sunday, April 6th at the Marshfield
Hospital, a baby girl. Mrs. Arsenault will be remembered as
Marjorie Bogumill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Bogumill. On
Wed. morning April 2, June Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Miller,
became the bride of Dick L. Phillippi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto
Phillippi at the brethren Parsonage, Stanley. Gilman – A baby
boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Podolak, on Sunday. 25
Years Ago (1972) Janice L. Slowiak and Thomas G.
Drehmel exchanged wedding vows at Central Lutheran Church, Chippewa
Falls March 25. Army Private Robert C. Abramczak, 19, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Chester Abramczak, Route 3, thorp, is assigned to Fort Ord,
Calif. where he is training under the modern volunteer army field
experiment. Bernard (Ben) Burzynski, 58, died at St. Joseph’s
Hospital, Marshfield of a heart attack on March 30th. Mitchell
Frank Myslinski, 60, resident of Route 2, Town of Taft, passed away at
St. Joseph’s Hospital, Sat. evening, April 1. Frank Wadzinski
Jr. was the Grand Champion and won the trophy in the pinewood Derby of
Cub Scouts of Thorp held at the Grade School gym a week ago Wed.
Services were held Fri. at the Hoeper-Kraut Funeral Home, Owen, for John
Charles Brossow, 89, of Route 2, Withee, who died Tues. at the
Marshfield Convalescent Center. 10 Years Ago (1987)
Savannah Alyse, daughter of Larry and Lori Stigen was
welcomed into the parish family of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Church, Sun.
April 5, 1987. Mrs. Margaret Bergant, 94, formerly of Willard
residing the past four years with her daughter, Mrs. David Kile of
Thorp, died Mon. morning, April 6, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital,
Stanley. Pearl Eleanor Furmanek, 81, Gilman, Wis., Town of
Cleveland, died Sat. April 4, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa
Falls. Charles Dean Lawrence, 69, Minocqua, died Sat. morning,
April 4, 1987 at Howard Young Medical Center, Woodruff, after a short
illness.
