100 Years Ago (1897)

Eidsvold – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Craig on Tues. last.
 
Max Weber and Geo Zillman have each invested in handsome new carriages.  John Boie is erecting a large and substantial farm residence on his farm southwest of town.
 
Dr. W. R. McCutcheon has been appointed postmaster of this village, in place of the writer whose time expires on July 4th.
 
Lightning struck three cows and one heifer belonging to Aug. Soderberg, about six o’clock p.m. on Tues. evening, killing them instantly.  The stock was grazing in a pasture lot near a wire fence when killed.
 
On Sunday afternoon last the wife of Albert Rusch, 41, residing in the Town of Reseburg died very suddenly.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Reseburg – Alene Pagel, one of the triplets, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pagel died early Sun. morning, age nearly ten months.
 
Pleasant View – Nice crops of hay this year.
 
The following is a statement of the Henderson Cheese Factory for the last half of May: Total milk-23,256; Cheese sold 2,288; Total fat 787.78; Price for fat .421; Average test 3.378; Price per lb. cheese .1725; Ave. price 100 lb. cheese 1.4356; Lb. milk per cheese 10.376; Amt. Paid patrons 331.56.
 
The body of Merton W. Malinson arrived here on Sat. morning last and was taken to the home of his mother, Mrs. E. B. Selden.  The funeral took place in the afternoon from the home.
 
Gallaudet College for the deaf, Washington, D.C., attended by Miss Meta Carolyn Hansman during the past five years and daughter of Mrs. Minnie Johnson, of this village, held its commencement exercises on Thurs. last.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
Funeral services for William Gorsegner, who died on his 76th birthday, Monday June 16, 1947, at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Degner at Marshfield, were held at the Baxter and Ritger Funeral Home, Marshfield, Thurs. afternoon.
 
Chas. Wendt, 75, residing in the Town of Reseburg for many years, passed away at his farm home Sun. morning of a heart attack.
 
Philip Kapsy, 31, Gilman, was fatally injured in an accident at Gilman last week, suffering a crushed and punctured lung when the sewer ditch in which he was working caved in.
 
A very pretty event took place at Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, Gilman, Sat. morning, June 21st, when Clarence Glidden Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Glidden Sr., and Miss Margie Wilcenski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Wilcenski, all of Gilman, were joined in holy marriage.
 
St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp, was the scene of a pretty wedding on Sat. June 14, when Miss Loretta, daughter of Mrs. Katherine Filipek and Harry Burzynski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burzynski, of Thorp, were united in marriage.
 
At a nuptial high mass at St. Mary’s Church in Stanley on June 10th, Emily Slowiak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Slowiak, became the bride of Harold John Ryba, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ryba, Jr.
 
Taft – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Brown, recently – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Westaby Jr., at the Victory Hospital on June 16th.
 
On June 10th the stork delivered a son to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Davis of Chicago.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Crane’s Elevator, Thorp, has been purchased by Larson’s Feed Mill here and the transaction took effect Tues. morning, following the inventory.  Both building and stock is involved.
 
On June 7, 1972, The Thorp Telephone Company installed its 2000th telephone at the Ted Lato trailer home located 1 ¾ miles south of Thorp.
 
Jim Amundson received the Life Award at the Boy Scout Court of Honor on Tues. evening.
 
Nick J. Stasko, 67, Thorp, died Tues. at his farm in the Town of Taft, Clark County.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Two Thorp students were among 777 candidates to receive degrees at the 78th annual spring commencement ceremonies at the U. of Wisconsin-La Crosse May 23: Gregory A. Penk, BS degree, majoring in computer science, Eva M. Malecki, BA degree, majoring in mass communications.
 
Air Force Airman First Class Thomas R. Karpinski, son of Chester and Alice Karpinski, has arrived for duty with the 410th Security Police Squadron, K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Mich.
 
Douglas B. Goodman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Goodman of Thorp, recently received his Masters Business Administration from the University Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.
