100 Years Ago (1897)

Thorp can boast of a haunted house located in the western part of the village.
 
Wm. Poppe of Withee discovered (?) a counterfeiters den, at that village one night last week.  Bill can furnish a hair-raising account of the affair, just ask him.
 
The loan of $1,800, to be used in building additional school room has been received by the school board and plans and specifications are being perfected in order to let the contract for the erection of the new structure.
 
A fishing party including ex-sheriff C. H. Sheldon, Dr. P. McKittrick, M. Wiltgen, M. O. Olson, Jas. Connors and ye editor, went to Pike Lake, about twelve miles north of Boyd on Fri. afternoon last and returned the following day with about one hundred pounds of bass and sun fish.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)

 
Neiman’s Corner – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lubrant last Fri.
 
Henderson’s Corner – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Western, of Junction, Aug. 9th. – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Schubel, of Edson last week.  Mrs. Schubel was formerly Dorcas McCaffery.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jno. Bauernfeind on Thurs. Aug. 10th. 
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Neiman on Wed. Aug. 9th.
 
The Big Four Canning Co. finished their run of pears on Sat. night last having canned 2,600,000 cans during the six weeks run.
 
Viola Andrews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Andrews, of this village and Percy C. Smith of Withee, were united in marriage at Stanley on Thurs. Aug. 3rd.
 
Tom Aucutt, Dewey Andrews and Louie Osowski started for the western harvest fields on Mon. last.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
Funeral services were held Wed. afternoon at the Danish Lutheran Church at Withee for Peter Sorensen, who died Sun.
 
Worden – Mr. and Mrs. Norval Boie are announcing the arrival of a baby boy, born Sat. night.
 
Miss Frances Donna Ruzic, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Ruzic, Willard, and Edward Kokaly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kokaly, Willard, repeated their marriage vows at the Holy Family Rectory at 9 a.m. Sat. 
 
A very pretty wedding took place on Sat. morning, Aug. 2nd at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church at Thorp, when Miss Dorothy Barbara Harycki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Basil Harycki, became the bride of Michael Briski, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Briski, Sr., of Greenwood.
 
St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp, was the scene of a pretty wedding, Aug. 9th, when Miss Vern Markowski, daughter of Mrs. Angeline Markowski and Joseph Juszczyk Jr., son of Mr. Joseph Juszczyk, of Sobieski, WI., were united in marriage.
 
On Aug. 17 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Richard’s Rectory, Chicago, Bonita Mae Jablonski became the bride of Patrick J. Keating.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Army Private David D. Rubisch, son of Mrs. Ardis Rubisch, Thorp, recently completed an eight week wheel vehicle mechanic course at the U. S. Army Training Center, Infantry, at Fort Ord, Calif.
 
Mrs. Helen M., Plotke died July 25, 1972, after a lingering illness.
 
Helen Szymanski, 82, passed away of a heart attack at her home Sat. Aug. 5th, 1972.
 
Raymond Kosla, 45, died Aug. 7th at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield due to a tractor accident.
 
Shannon Jaye, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Kwiesielewicz was baptized on Sun.
 
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Ehrlichmann of Milwaukee, a baby girl on Aug. 14.  The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wynimko.
 
George W. Wendt, 65, of Wisconsin Rapids, a native of Thorp, was pronounced dead on arrival at Riverview Hospital there on Friday of an apparent heat attack.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Kathy and John Lewan, Lublin, are proud to announce the birth of a daughter, Lindy Marie, born Aug. 14, 1987.
 
Gary and patty Schauer wish to announce the birth of a son, Dustin Jay, born Aug. 11, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
 
Thorp native Marie Oberle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Oberle, has begun practice in family dentistry at the Chippewa Valley Dental Health Associated in Eau Claire.
 
Joseph Urbas, 83, formerly of Stanley, died Mon. Aug. 10, 1087 (1987) at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
