100 Years Ago (1897)

Some sneak thief stole about thirty quarts of canned goods from A. Blank’s cellar on Fri. night last.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Biddle on Sun. morning last.  Dr. McCutchen was attending physician.
 
John Daniels and Chas. Darrar, employed here by the Cirkel Mfg. Co., moved their personal effects here last week and will become permanent residents.
 
Will Aucutt has purchased H. J. Minard’s village residence and lots for $250 and will take possession as soon as Mr. Minard’s farm residence is completed. 
 
Louis Banderob and Jos. Sheplock are having the “dumps” these days.  They went fishing for black berries on Sun. last and through accident lost their bait.  Of course, they didn’t secure any berries but hope for better luck next time.
 
Burglars affected an entrance into the dwellings of Max Weber and Mayor W. R. McCutcheon on Thursday night last, securing a purse containing about 40¢ at Mr. McCutcheon’s and $4.50 in cash and a gold watch and chain at M. Weber’s.  A soap peddler and a book agent who “worked” the town the previous day were suspected as being the guilty parties, but no arrests were made.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)

 
Pozen – Frank Satalowicz is building a new barn on the same basement that burned a month ago.
 
Henderson’s Corner – For the last half of July the Henderson Factory paid a little over 39 cents for fat and about $1.10 per cwt for milk. Another new factory was added Aug. 16.
 
Worden – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Schmidt Thurs. August 17th.  They named the baby William Christ Bernard.
 
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Clapper of St. Paul, a seven pound daughter, Aug. 16.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
Mrs. John Verkuilen, 80, an esteemed and well-known lady of our community passed away in Hillsboro, Wis., on Mon. Aug. 25, 1947.
 
On Sat. afternoon, Aug. 9th, Miss Emily Szpara, daughter of Mrs. Catherine Szpara, became the bride of James Carroll, son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Carroll at St. James Church in Chicago.
 
A daughter, Karen Marie, was born to Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Tranel at Galena, Ill., on Aug. 20th.  Mrs. Tranel will be remembered as Marie Czernicki.
 
A daughter, Barbara Jean was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gronek in Chicago, on Sat. Aug. 23, 1947.
 
Word has been received here of the birth of a daughter, Carol Anne on Aug. 12th to Dr. and Mrs. C. B. lane of Green Bay.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Louie Abramczuk, 56, passed away suddenly at his home on Fri. Aug. 18.
 
Vincent Pawlowski, 59, died suddenly at his home in the Town of Roosevelt on Sat. Aug. 19th.
 
Albert Kosla, Sr., 70, died at his home at Bellinger on Wed. Aug. 23rd.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. James Henke of Eau Claire, a baby girl on Aug. 16th.
 
St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp was the scene for the marriage ceremony for Vickie McCue and Dale Brunner on Sat. Aug. 5th.
 
Hebb Air Force Base Chapel, Big Spring, Texas was the setting Sat. July 22 for the wedding of Diane Ogurek and Lt. Nile Newburn.
 
Miss Nancy Welzien, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Welzien, Stanley, graduated with the fortieth class of United Hospital Vocational School of Practical Nursing on July 28, 1972.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Strzok, Thorp, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Sat. July 1, 1972.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Miss Margaret Crowley, 93, died Aug. 13, 1987, at River Falls.  She was born in Thorp.
 
Christa E. Shakal, 83, died Thurs. Aug. 20, 1987 at Thorp Care Center.
 
Eugene and Stell (Kramasz) Wilhelm will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Sun. Sept. 5.
 
Catherine Mary Miller and Jay Bernard Stuttgen both of Thorp were united in marriage at St. Bernard-Hedwig Catholic Church, Thorp, on Sat. Aug. 1, 1987.
 
Pamela Kay Bieno exchanged marriage vows with Paul David Ebben on St. Aug. 8, 1987 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
 
Tracy Gabryel, daughter of Clarke and Fred Gabryel, Gilman, exchanged marriage vows with Roy Alger, son of Rosella and Richard Alger, Thorp, June 10, 1987 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Gilman.
 
Valorie Hardy and Joel Kulesa were married June 20 at English Lutheran Church of Bateman, Chippewa Falls.
