100 Years Ago (1897)

Eidsvold – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Solon Peters on the 8th inst.  She died the next day and was buried in the Skandinavin Cemetery.
 
Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmer of the Town of Reseburg are rejoicing over their first born – a daughter, born to them on the 11th inst.
 
A. O. Finch, of Kilbourn is in town negotiating a deal for a car load of onions from parties who have same for sale in locating which he is being assisted by E. R. Wiley. We understand he has purchased 200 bushes (bushels) from John McGrogan, 135 from Geo. W. Craig, 125 from Geo. C. Howard, 100 from Jorgen Jorgensen, 100 from Wm. Burss, 200 from Fred Sheldon of Longwood and several smaller lots from others the price ranging from 40 to 45 cents.
 
Jos. Sheblak, the popular clerk at the Thorp Mercantile Co’s Store, who handles customers in five languages, is adding another profession to his already numerous accomplishments, being no less than the mounting of deer heads, birds, snakes and anything in the animal or insect line that may come in his way.

Gregoire’s Corner – Patrick Shortell, 65, passed away Mon. Dec. 11th.
 
At about 5:15 on Thurs. morning last the Limited Soo Line passenger train No. 3 bound from Chicago to Minneapolis met freight train No. 22 pulled by two engines, at a point about one-half mile west of this village and the result was the loss of two lives.
 
The following officers were elected at a meeting of Cecil Tormey Post 118 of the American Legion on Thurs. last: Commander – John Crowley; Vice Commander F. C. Springer; Service Officer –W. F. Nolechek; Adjutant – Mike Lesniewski; Chaplain – Dr. F. D. Jackey; Sergeant at Arms – T. Malinowski; Finance Officer – Guy  Leiby; Orderly – Gus Weisner; Historian – W.S. Wagner.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
Funeral services were conducted at St. Hedwig’s Church, Mon. Dec. 15th for Mrs. Magdalena Tomaszewski, 70, of the Town of Withee, who passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls on Dec. 11, 1947 of a heart attack.
 
Miss Rose Krych, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Krych, Thorp, became the bride of Edward Kluk, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Kluk, in ceremonies performed in St. Stanislaus B. & M. Catholic Church, Chicago.
 
Taft – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Ehlert on Fri. Dec. 19th.
 
Around the Corner – Frank Thill, 79, passed away at his home Sat. afternoon after a lingering illness.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)

 
The Senior class of Thorp High School held a class meeting to nominate three senior girls for the Daughters of American Revolution (D.A.R.) Good Citizen Award.  The nominees were Debbie Penk, Diane Niedzwiecki, and Jean Smith.
 
Diane Niedzwiecki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Niedzwiecki and Tim Ahles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ahles, were chosen by members of the high school faculty to represent Thorp High School in the Elks Most Valuable Student’s Contest.
 
Janice Lynn Beckman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Beckman, Thorp, was among graduates that received degrees at Eau Clarie UW ceremonies Sun. Dec. 17th.  Her degree was Bachelor of Fine Arts (in Art).
 
Navy Airman Apprentice Richard R. Wrobel Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Wrobel Sr. of Withee, graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes.
 
Navy Seaman Apprentice John Possley, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Possley, Thorp, graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes.
 
St. Mary’s Czestochowa Catholic Church, Route 3, Stanley was the scene of a double ring ceremony which took place on Sat. Nov. 25.  At that time vows were said between Katherine Symbal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Symbal, Stanley and Sgt. Ronald John Osowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Osowski, Thorp.
 
Miss Sandy Gerrits, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Jakowicz, Jr. of Boyd, became the bride of Randy LaGrander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don LaGrander of Stanley on Sat. Nov. 4 at St. Joseph’s Church, Boyd.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)

 
The Thorp High boys’ basketball team has taken an early season lead in their quest for the 1987-88 Eastern Cloverbelt Championship.  Going into Tues. night’s game against Neillsville, the Cards were 3-0 in league, with a one game lead over Mosinee, Loyal and Colby.
 
Thorp dairy farmer Ed Maier was re-elected to the Clark County ASCS Committee for a three year term and was also re-elected to serve as chairman of the Committee for 1988.
 
Bert C. Cattanach, 73, Owen, died Fri. Dec. 18, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
 
Stephanie Rosemeyer and Allen Krzyzanowski, both of Thorp exchanged marriage vows on Sat. Nov. 7, 1987 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
