100 Years Ago (1898)
Wm. Strassman has moved his dwelling to his land lying in the
southwest part of the village which he purchased last spring.
Section foremen John Roth and Geo. Yoder, each expect a railroad
velocipede this week which are to be used by them in making trips over
their respective sections every day, Sundays especially. With the
old hand-cars it is necessary to take their entire crews to propel them
and this new contrivance saves much time and labor. The party
bound for Copper River, Alaska, started on their journey of 4,000 miles
on Tues. morning, taking the limited at 4 a.m. E. L. Snyder, Geo. Gabert,
Herman Doege comprise the party. If the boys report any success in
the gold hunting line, a party of 25 or 30 will follow them.
75 Years Ago (1923) Neiman’s Corner – The Town of
Withee Telephone Co. held their annual meeting at F. P. Neiman’s Fri.
afternoon. B. Borysiewicz was elected president, A. Childs
secretary and Anton Papierniak treasurer. About eight inches of
snow fell on Sat. night last which promises fair sledding if cold
weather continues. Frank Weber, who for several years has been
employed in the hardware department of the North Western Mercantile Co.
at Stanley has resigned and will go to Cambridge, Wis. to take the
management of a store. The following are the officers and
directors elected at the annual meeting of the stockholders of the
Farmers Exchange Bank, on Wed. Jan. 10th: John Verkuilen, Pres.; Wm.
Krause, Vice-Pres.; Jos. S. Bogumill, second Vice Pres.; John Slota,
Cashier; M. E. Lesniewski, Ass’t Cashier. Directors: John
Verkuilen, John N. Boie, A. O. Rhea, Jos. S. Bogumill, W. Krause, N. P.
Hansen, Val. Przybylski and R. Verweyst. 50 Years Ago
(1948) Funeral services were conducted at St. Bernard’s
Church in the village for Anna Wolf, 64, who passed away at Owen, after
a lingering illness on Sat. Jan. 10, 1948. Funeral services for
Mrs. Orin O. Owen, 52, who died of a heart attack Sat. at her home in
Madison, were held Wed. in the Frautschi Funeral Home in that city.
On Sat. Dec. 27th a daughter was born to Lt. Comdr and Mrs. E. J. Klink,
of Milwaukee. Mrs. F. P. Neis has been visiting there for the past
several weeks. 25 years Ago (1973) Anna
F. Przybylski, 75, of Thorp, died Mon. at St. Joseph’s Hospital,
Chippewa Falls. Edward Wynimko, 61, died suddenly Sat.
afternoon. Tom Woods of Thorp was sworn in Fri. afternoon at the
Courthouse as Undersheriff of Clark County. Two box cars
derailed at the west crossing in the Village of Withee about noon Wed.
holding up rail and road traffic most of the afternoon. Lublin –
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Staniec Jr. are the parents of a baby girl born to them
on Dec. 29th at the Medford Hospital. They named the baby Tammy
Arlene. – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Gajda on Dec. 29th at
Stanley Memorial Hospital. They named the baby Alan Joseph.
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Mattes of Urbana, Ill., a son,
Lance Arthur, on Jan. 13th. Thorp’s basketball squads are having
one of the best season ever, as Junior Varsity is 10-0, varsity 8-2 and
Freshman squad 5-2 for an overall record of 23-4. 10

Thurs. Jan. 14, 1988 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
Janet Paskert, 39, Greenwood, Town of Reseburg, died at her home on
Thurs. Jan. 14, 1988. Robert Williams, 83, Stanley, former
resident of Thorp, died Sat. Jan. 16, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital,
Marshfield. Anthony Ciszewski, 81, Withee, Town of Reseburg died
Tues. Jan. 12, 1988 at Neillsville Memorial Home. Ellery
(Timber) Frese, 79, a former Town of Reseburg resident, died Wed. Jan.
13, 1988 at Neillsville Memorial Hospital. Helen Florkowski, 83,
formerly of Thorp, died unexpectedly Tues. Jan. 12, 1988.
Raymond and Eleanor Baldeschwiler celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary Jan. 9, 1988 at Long Branch with an “Open House.” A
son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Slipek of Abbotsford on Fri. Jan. 15,
1988. A daughter, Kelli jean was born, Mon. Jan. 11, 1988 to
Nancy and Jerry Gardner of Austin, TX. The Thorp High boys’
basketballs team helped themselves to a 56-43 win over Mosinee Fri. Jan
15 and got some help from other teams to take sole possession of first
place in the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference. Jennifer Polnaszek
of Thorp is one of 59 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire seniors named
to receive the 1987-88 Outstanding Senior Award; in recognition of her
academic achievement. James E. Langteau, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Peter Larson of Thorp, is among the students who received Bachelor’s
Degrees after completing work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Langteau received his degree in journalism.
