100 Years Ago (1898)

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Philip Mattes, of Reseburg, on Mon. March 7; Dr. McCutcheon, attending physician.
 
You cannot promote the interest of your town by simply suggesting what should be done.  Suggestions are always in order but it requires energy in motion to accomplish results.
 
Sleighing is about “whipped” and horse teams are enjoying a needed rest.  The present winter has been very favorable for loggers as the huge rollways in Nye, Lusk & Hudson’s yards amply testify.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
Henderson’s Corner – Mr. and Mrs. Sabon Taylor had their little son christened Lewis Sabon at St. Mary’s Church in Stanley on Thurs.
 
Reseburg – The remains of Mrs. Louise Best who died at Kiel, Wis. on Fri. March 2nd of pneumonia arrived here Mon. evening and taken immediately to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Philip Mattes.
 
Northern Echoes – At one o’clock Sun. morning a cloud of smoke rose from the Stanley Janicki home and in a few moments their house was on fire.
 
A baby boy was born to Dr. and Mrs. W. G. Riopelle on Mon.
 
Geo. Becker heads the bowling list with the high score of 257 with seven successive strikes.
 
The old Nye, Lusk & Hudson saw mill built here in 1881 is to be dismantled and a new planing mill erected in its place by the Thorp Lumber Co.
 
The large farm north of Boyd owned by the Yellow River Sheep and Wool Growers, Inc. association was sold here last week Wed. to several parities, from Wausau who were stockholders in the concern.  We understand the farm and all personal property were bid in at $27,000.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)

 
Thorp High School’s Cardinals copped the regional consolation crown from Durand by a score of 57-34.  Players were: Silver Hedler, Don Jacques, Don Telford, Jerry Glasshof, John Slupski, Ray Czech, Bill Polnaszek, Gill Bachmeyer, Bill Wagner, and Lee Reinke. Coach was Stewart North with Managers Wildenberg and Wayne Glasshof.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Delton Ebben had their infant son baptized at St. Bernard’s Church on Sun.
 
Reseburg – A daughter, Jean Elaine was born to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Tomczak, Feb. 21st.
 
25 Years Ago (1973)

 
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Koltis of West Salem are the proud parents of a daughter, Heather Dawn, born Feb. 28th.
 
Fire extensively damaged a building used by the Smith Construction Company south of Stanley Fri. afternoon.
 
Peter Grendzinski, 72, died at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley Tues. March 6th.
 
Bernice Gutowski, 63, passed away at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley, on Sun. March 4th.
 
Stephanie Chrzaszcz, 79, passed away at the home of her son Steve Chrzaszcz on Feb. 22, 1973.
 
Mary Ann Vandenberg, 76, Holcombe, died Tues. in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Thorp’s Cardinals swished 50 per cent of their field goal attempts in a 76f-61 win over Spencer’s Rockets in the finals of the WIAA Class B Regional basketball tournament at Spencer, Sat. night.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Narlock of Rothschild, a baby girl, on March 1st.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

 
A son was born to Robert and Jerilyn Jacobs of Naples, Italy on Feb. 15, 1988.  His name is Alexander Anthony.  Grandparents are Ted and Helen Papierniak of Thorp and Robert and Lorraine Jacobs of Hudson.
 
In his first year as a high school basketball coach, in Elk Mound in 1949, Jack Tetzner led his team to a conference championship.  After four years in coaching, and three conference titles, Tetzner came to Thorp High School.  He led off with a division championship.  Thirty-four years later, in his last season as the Thorp High court general, Tetzner will leave the profession like he came in-as a champion.
 
Sgt. Kevin J. Grendzinski, son of Alex and Hilda Grendzinski of Thorp, has graduated from the Air Force non-commissioned officer leadership school.
 
Bobb’s Mill – Bruce and Sue (nee Grajkowski) Miller are the proud parents of a baby girl, Jessica, born on March 4, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
