100 Years Ago (1898)
Eidsvold – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Eyler on the
11th inst. Four inches of snow fell on Mon. Evening, April 18.
Seeding began last week and farmers are, consequently, very busy.
Thos. Steele Jr. has rented his farm recently purchased from Mrs. Leroy
Graves to Herman Frese. A quiet wedding occurred at St. Mary’s
Church, Kingston, Wis. on April 11, 1898. The contracting parties
were John Charles Foley of Burns, Oregon and Mary Ellen Boylan of
Kingston. 75 Years Ago (1923) Cashier
John Slota, of the Farmers Exchange Bank, has moved into the John Wojeck
dwelling where he will reside until his new residence is completed.
Contract for growing over 800 acres of peas and 125 acres of cabbage
have been signed up by local farmers with the Big Four Canning Co. plant
in this village. The Bellinger Mfg. Co. which has operated a box
and crating factory at Bellinger, eight miles north of Thorp, for a
number of years have shut down their plant on account of the suspension
of train service on the S. M. and P. Railroad. 50 Years
Ago (1948) Walter Kulesa, 56, passed away at his home
in the Town of Taft, Taylor County, on April 4, 1948, after a lingering
illness. Albert Verkuilen, 72, a former resident of this
community, passed away at the Stanley Hospital on Fri. April 9th.
He had been a resident of Stanley since 1932. Cecil L. Snyder,
son of Eli and Louise Snyder, born in this village of Thorp on Oct. 1,
1893, died in Newberry, Mich. April 7, 1948, of a heart condition and
was buried in the L’Anse Cemetery. A little editor, weighing
eight pounds 14 ounces, was born Sat. April 10, 1948, at the Victory
Hospital in Stanley. His name is Robert Warren Elkins.

Worden – Mrs. Marce Wagener returned from the Victory Hospital on Sun.
with their baby girl, who was born on Mon. April 5th. She will be
called Alice Mae. John Ciolkosz, 85, passed away at his home in
Thorp Tues. afternoon, March 30, of old age infirmities.
25 Years Ago (1973) Gail Jarvis, 20, daughter
of Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Jarvis of Withee an Owen veterinarian, died in a
flaming car crash at 1:07 a.m. Wed. She was the driver of the fatal
car. It is reported a passenger, Jack Barager, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Barager, Owen Newspaper, is burned seriously on the lower part of
his body. Joseph Mamayek, 63, died suddenly of a heart attack
April 4th at Chicago, Ill. Miss Celia A. Szczech and Wayne R.
Sime repeated their wedding vows on Sat. March 17th, at the home of the
groom’s parents, at Platteville. Michael J. Glassner, 96, of
Stanley died Sat. at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
Josephine Wehlacz, 87, died Sun. evening April 15th. 10
Years Ago (1988) Kayla Marie, daughter of Mike and Kim
Lewien was welcomed in to the parish family of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig
Church, Sun. April 17, 1988 with Fr. John Puerner officiating at her
baptism. Mary Sawka, 98, Thorp, died Fri. April 15, 1988 at
Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire. Cecelia K. Karolewicz, nee
Wnek, passed away on Mon. April 11, 1988 in Chicago, Ill. Gilman
– Darrell and Barb Romig are the proud grandparents of Dana Marie who
was born of their daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Russell Isenberger
of Thorp on April 5, 1988. Paternal grandparents are William and
Barbara Isenberger of Thorp.
