100 Years Ago (1898)

Boyd Leader – Married at the Catholic Church at Edson Tuesday, Peter Neisius to Miss Mary Plecity.
 
Work on excavating the basement for Garrison Bros. new store began on Mon. Wm Barrett having the contract.
 
Prof. A. C. Finn, of Loyal, has been engaged as principal for the next school year by the school board at a salary of $75 per month.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
Pleasant View – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Rogalski, a daughter, Saturday May 5.
 
Pozen – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Sniegowski Thurs. May 3rd.
 
Emil Ohmen of Polley stopped to visit his mother here Sat. he left for Oshkosh Sat. where he will be employed.
 
John G. Bogumill purchased one and one-half lots adjoining S. S. Warner’s residence from the latter last week and will erect a modern residence thereon.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Daniels of Cylon, Wis. are rejoicing over the birth of a pair of twin girls, the event occurring on May 3rd the date being Mr. Daniel’s birthday.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Barnhardt of Fox Lake and Mr. and Mrs. Jno Lamond, of Duluth, arrived here last week and expect to remain permanently.  Mr. Barnhardt is with the Thorp Auto Sales Co.
 
Chas. F. Schmidt, 39, died at his home in this village on Thurs. May 3, 1923, after a lingering illness extending over a period of several years.
 
The Village of Dorchester suffered a severe loss by fire on Tues. night of last week, the loss being estimated at $150,000.  The fire started in the pool hall.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Camp, of Worden on Thurs.  The mother’s birthday is the same day.
 
Breezy Hill – Bernard Mertens, of Thorp purchased 40 acres of land here last week of Oscar Ramberg, of Stanley.
 
Bobb’s Mill – Word was received of the death of Rev. W. P. Powell, former pastor of the Congregational Church here.
 
On May 9th the Rev. Thomas S. Obricki, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Obricki, will celebrate the first Solemn High Mass at Five Holy Martyr’s Church, Chicago, Ill.
 
25 Years Ago (1973)

 
Jerry Lee Wachsmuth, 24, Hannibal was the victim of drowning while on construction work April 26, at Burlington.  He fell into a river and was swept away by the current.  His body was recovered that Sat.
 
Miss Mary Ann Prokopiak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Prokopiak, Thorp, was given in marriage by her father to Robert John Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Powell of Chicago on Sat. April 28, 1973 at St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp.
 
Vincent Gulcynski, 78, died suddenly at his home, April 26, 1973.
 
A new arrival in Germany, Sp/5 and Mrs. Larry E. Luzinski of Darmstadt, Germany are the proud parents of a son, Michael David, born on April 21, 1973.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Teclaw are the proud parents of a baby girl, named Jennifer Dawn, born May 7th at the Jacksonville Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida.
 
John A. Kozenka, 76, died at his home in the City of Thorp of an apparent heart attack on Wed. May 2nd.
 
Mrs. Lila E. Gibbs, 64, Chippewa Falls, died Fri. at Luther Hospital.
 
Peter C. Ludovic, 80, Neillsville, died Wed. at Luther Hospital.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
The J & J Root Beer Stand in Thorp was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Soderberg are the proud parents of a baby girl born May 13th at Germantown, Maryland.
 
Miss Sally Constance Kowalczyk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Kowalczyk, Gilman, became the bride of Richard Henry Dubiak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dubiak, Gilman on Sat. May 5 at Ss. Peter and paul Catholic Church, Gilman.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Robert Alger, a baby boy on May 8th.
