100 Years Ago (1898)
The Village Board has invested in a large new safe and the same was
placed in the Village hall last week for the safe keeping of the Village
records. The matter of establishing a public library will come
up for action before the village board on Mon. evening next. All
interested in this enterprise are requested to be present. A
horse hitched to a buggy occupied by Peter Lauson, Mrs. E. Cordes and
son Harry, ran away on Mon. afternoon about two miles south of the
village, throwing out the occupants. Mrs. Cordes and Mr. Lauson
bruised considerably, the boy escaping without a scratch. Aug.
Cirkel was up from Boyd on Mon. and informed us that his firm’s heading
factory here would begin operations in about two weeks. Also that
basswood bolts, 38 inches long, bark off, would be bought at the yards
here at $2 per cord. Elm bolts, 31 inches long, bark on, $1.75 per
cord. The interesting ceremony of circumcision of the late
arrival in the family of A. J. Krom, as practiced by the Jewish Church,
was conducted by Rev. Lass, of Minneapolis, on Sun. last, at the home of
the youngster on the north side. “Soly” is the name selected by
the parents for the newcomer. The school meeting called for Sat.
evening last, to vote on the question of establishing a free high school
was poorly attended, but thirty-two voters deeming themselves
sufficiently interested to attend. After short addresses by Prof. A. C.
Finn and others on the subject vote was taken resulting in the adoption
of the resolution favoring the establishment of a free high school.
The vote was 20 for and 12 against. 75 Years Ago (1923)
Neiman’s Corner – Mr. and Mrs. M. Jasinski had their baby baptized
Sun. The baby’s name is Edward. Worden – On Wed. about
noon the Hillside Dairy Cheese factory burned, destroying most of the
contents including about 200 lbs. of cheese and the household goods of
E. Holderman, the cheesemaker. John C. Duffy, 77, a veteran of
the civil war, died Mon. at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls
where he was being treated for various ailments including old age for
the past month. Dr. C. K. Dittmer, of Hayward, was in the
village last week and purchased Dr. W. J. Frank’s dental office fixtures
and will locate here with his family in the course of a few days.
50 Years Ago (1948) Mrs. Katherine Wagner, 83, was born
on May 8, 1865 at Brazer Falls, New York, the daughter of Dan Diamond
and Fan nie Cotter. While still a young girl she moved with her parents,
brothers and sisters to Colby, Wis., where she grew up. Thurs. she
was about the house as usual. Shortly after breakfast she was overcome
by a heart attack. She was accompanied by her son and daughter-in-law
to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls, where she appeared to be
recovering. She never lost consciousness but a sinking spell
overtook her early Fri. morning and she passed away. Ted
Schultz, 19 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schultz, Thorp,
suffered a broken neck and head injuries when his father’s car left the
road and slid down an embankment Wed., May 19 in the Village of Gilman
near of old bridge. The top of the jeep was seared off by a tree.
Michael S. Zasacki, 70, retired farmer of the Town of Withee, who
left several weeks ago to make his home in Chicago, passed away there of
old age infirmities on May 20, 1948. Glenn Coates, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Coates, of Thorp, graduates June 25th from the
University of Wisconsin law school. Mrs. Mary Biddle received
word Tues. that a baby girl, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Christen,
of Hixton, Wis., at the Neillsville Hospital, May 16th. They named
her Karen Grace. Fred A. Kosieracki, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cypryan
Kosieracki of Chicago, former residents of Thorp, and Jean Helen,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Wolff of Chicago, were joined in Holy
Matrimony at St. Hyacinth’s Church, Chicago, on May 2, 1948.
Neiman’s Corner – A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lukasiewicz
at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield on Sun. May 16th. Miss
Frances Suda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Suda of Longwood became the
bride of Edward Gosse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gosse of Owen, at
Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Withee, Sat. morning May 8th.
Funeral services for Andrew Sisco, who died Fri., May 14th, were held
Mon. at the Candlish Chapel, Fond du Lac. Gilman – Born to Mr.
and Mrs. Stanley Liazuk on Wed. a baby girl. 25 years
Ago (1973) In May 1898, Mr. Hutchins, head of the State
Library Commission, was induced to come to Thorp by Mr. Wm. Wagner,
editor of The Thorp Courier, and George Parkhill, a local attorney.
A meeting held June 11, 1898; the organization of the Thorp Public
Library was perfected. The library, consisting of 120 volumes, was
located in the rooms over the Courier, with Mr. Wagner, as acting
librarian. A 15-year-old Withee youth drowned in the Black River
there Fri. afternoon while swimming with three companions. Sheriff
department officials recovered the body of Dale Latta, son of Mr. and
Mrs. George Latta. It is reported that about 20 head of young
stock was lost in the fire which destroyed the barn on the farm of
Laverne Neisius, a mile south and one-half mile east of Mattes Livestock
in the Town of Reseburg. Stanley F. Wasilewski, 75, died Mon. at
St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls. The Hewlett Packard
Fellowship in Surveying and Geodesy provides a $2,000 award to an
individual for graduate studying surveying, goedesyor a related field.
The fellowship first recipient, Terrence J. Keating, Thorp, of the
University of Wisconsin, was named at the Joint American Congress on
Surveying and Mapping, and American Society of Photogrammetry meeting in
Washington, D. C. Miss Sarah Brechler, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Brechler of Fennimore, became the bride of Dennis Lendosky,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Lendosky, Thorp on Sat. May 26, 1973.
10 Years Ago (1988) Edward Romanowski, 76, Route 1,
Thorp, died Fri. May 20, 1988, at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
Three Thorp teachers retire after years of service: Floyd Hanley,
Eleanor Hofkes, and Jack Tetzner. Barbara Emmerson, 86, Withee,
died Sat. May 21, 1988 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
Bruno Lato, 74, of Lublin, Poland, died Feb. 18, 1988, after a lingering
illness in Poland. Olga Gerrits, 72, Stanley, died Fri. May 20,
1988 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley. Chester DeForth,
died in Illinois recently. Chester was born in Thorp, Sept. 7,
1903, the son of Peter and Katherine (Zimmer) DeForth. South
Worden – Cindy and Mike Wozniak are the proud parents of a baby boy,
Steven John, born Mon. May 16, 1988.
