100 Years Ago (1898)

Nye, Lusk & Hudson are shipping about 70,000 feet of basswood lumber daily from their yards in this village.
 
C. L. Adams, Frank Laurent, W. S. Parks, F. M. Craig and R. Mosher took in the excursion to St. Paul on Sun.
 
School district clerk E. R. Wiley furnishes us with the following census figures of the resident scholars in this district; Males 190; Females 209; Total number of children of school age in the district 399.
 
M. J. C. Duff has sold his residence property to R. L. Rublee of Augusta, who will remove here this week.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Kaczor on Sat. July 21st.
 
John Kuehl purchased a lot in the McGrogan addition from Jos. F. Jaeger on Mon.
 
Solvrud & Co. sold a portion of their lot south of their meat market last week to Mrs. R. J. Kriese.
 
The Owen Dairy Co., at Owen, suffered the loss of their butter and casein manufacturing plant by fire last week.
 
J. J. Klak, a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin, has left for Milwaukee where he will be employed as Valuation Engineer with the Wisconsin Telephone Company.
 
The past week has been marked with extreme heat daily, the thermometer ranging from 92 to 95.  The hottest place in the village has been the cooking room at the Big Four Pea Cannery.
 
A. G. Rasmussen sold his residence property and stock of electrical goods and auto accessories to Joseph Turenne last week and the latter has already taken possession.
 
The biggest day’s run on peas last week at the cannery was 151,000 cans, vouched for by Supt. J. E. Strom; Barney Borysiewicz hauled a load of peas netting 2,200 pounds and Philip Deforth hauled the largest load so far this season containing 2,370 pounds of peas.
 
Last Mon. Gov. Blaine signed the legislative act which created the new Town of Foster, by detaching township 25 and 26 from the Town of Mentor.
 
School Census 1923: Thorp Village: Boys 104, Girls 126; Town of Thorp: Boys 36, Girls 33; Withee Town: Boys 30, Girls 20: Reseburg Town; Boys 3, Girls 3; total Boys 173 and Girls 182.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)

 
Last rites were conducted at St. Mary’s Church at Lublin Thursday, July 15th for Michael Kowalski, 66, who lost his life in an accident in Milwaukee on July 11. 1948.
 
Eidsvold – Mr. and Mrs. Joe Haas received an announcement of the birth of a son to their daughter, Mrs. Edward Hull, of Colorado.
 
Worden – Word was received here of the birth of a baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Larson, of Milwaukee on July 13th.  The mother was the former June Boie.
 
South Worden – Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Swope are the proud parents of a baby boy, Larry Dean, born July 15th – A baby daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Hanson, of Chippewa Falls, July 14th.  Mrs. Hanson was formerly Pearl Miller of Worden.
 
In the July 8th issue, in the Zukowski-Cervenka wedding write up, it should have been Frank Cervenka not Cervenski.
 
25 years Ago (1973)
 
Since June 1972 the Thorp Telephone Company of Thorp has added over one million dollars in dial equipment and telephones to provide its 1500 subscribers with complete private line service.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Cook celebrated their 65th Wedding anniversary Sun. July 29th.
 
Lori Kay Haas, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Lavern Haas, Thorp, will be a member of the 1973 Summer Commencement class of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Sat. Aug. 4th.  She is a special education teacher at Marshfield.
 
St. June 30 at a 2 o’clock ceremony Edith Huberty and Arthur Doege were united in marriage at the Methodist Church, Stanley.
 
Walter Boyarski, 68, former resident of Thorp, died Thurs. July 26, at Hines Veterans hospital, Chicago.
 
Leo Frederick Strovers, 56, resident of Stanley and a farm implement dealer, died at the Victory Memorial Hospital July 16th, the result of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
 
A service for former Modesto resident Everett H. Stracker, 72, was held Tues. in the Ahannon Chapel Orange, formerly of Thorp.
 
Martin A. Markuson, 51, Town of Taft, Route 2, Stanley, died Sat. in the Town of Taft.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

 
 John Kaczmarczyk, 63, Thorp, died Thurs. July 14, 1988 at his home.
 
Robert J. (Bob) Huls, 57, Chippewa Falls, former Thorp resident, died Mon. July 18, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
South Worden – Mr. and Mrs. Joe Horban have a new grandson, James David, born July 10, 1988 to Mr. and Mrs. Ron Horban of Indianapolis, Indiana.
 
Two great grandchildren for Art and Agnes Jacque’s, a daughter born to Michael and Jane Scheffler of West Palm Beach, FL on July 16th and a son to Scott and Barbara Scheibe of Marshfield on July 17th.
 
Butler – One day last week was the happiest day in Dennis and Sue Murphy’s life; on July 12th a son Mathew Ray was born.
 
Inez Nourse wished to announce her marriage to Robert Campbell on June 25, 1988 at the Thorp Methodist Church.
