100 Years Ago (1898)

Herman Friess and Ben Krom each shipped a car load of livestock to Chicago on Sun. last.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Albert on Sun. morning Oct. 23rd.
 
L. H. McGuire and family departed for Clay Court House, W. V. on Fri. last where they intend to reside in the future.
 
The Thorp Gun club is making preparations for spending the open deer season in the woods at Hemlock Dam about fifteen miles northeast of the village and most of  the members will be in camp on Tues. next ready to begin operations.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church was the scene of a pretty wedding on Tues. morning, Oct. 23rd when the marriage of Miss Anna Papierniak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Papierniak, of the Town of Withee and Mr. John Borysiewicz, of Chicago, was solemnized.
 
The Dairy Belt Cheese Co. moved into their new quarters east of the Soo Depot, on Sat.  The structure has been entirely remodeled and put in first class condition for the handling and shipment of cheese.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)

 
Cheerful yellow and pink chrysanthemums enchanted the altar of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thorp, Sat. morning at a Nuptial Mass as Rev. Muckerheide performed the double ring ceremony that united in marriage Miss Mildred Haas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Haas of Thorp and Edward Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith of Stanley.
 
Hosiah H. Starks, 70, died at the home of his nephew, Everett Starks at Eidsvold Mon. Oct. 18th.
 
Mrs. Eda Louise Harris died at her home in Stanley Sun. evening after a lingering illness.
 
Funeral services were conducted at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church here on Tues. Oct. 12, 1948 for Paul P. Holubowicz, 78, who died at his home in the Town of Reseburg on Oct. 9th of a heart attack.
 
Reseburg – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Graikowski on Sat. Oct. 9th.
 
25 years Ago (1973)

 
A comprehensive expansion of it s home office was announced here by ITT Thorp Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation specializing in financial services.  Included in the program are plans to build a service and Distribution Center in Thorp and to remodel the company’s headquarters building to provide additional office space.
 
Judy Smriga, United Leader for Thorp Elementary School has been invited to present a session at the State Teachers’ Convention in Milwaukee on Nov. 1.
 
Congratulations are in order to, Lori E. Zurakowski a district 5 winner of the “Make it yourself with Wool” contest, held Oct. 27 in Manawa, Wis.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Burzynski had their infant daughter, Diane Carol, who was born Oct. 3, baptized at St. Mary’s Czestochowa Parish Oct. 28.
 
A beautiful fall wedding took place at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at Thorp when Miss Irene Schmidt of St. Paul, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hermiss Schmidt became the bride of Rolf Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Knutson of St. Paul, Sat. Sept. 20th.
 
St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp was the setting of the Oct. 20 marriage of Rita Nowicki and Dennis Karnopp.
 
Elmer E. Jackson, 78, of Modesto, Calif. formerly of the Withee area, died Thurs. at the Union Hospital in Modesto.
 
Alex Soeller, 77, died Oct. 29, 1973.
 
Mrs. Ann Luzinski, 42, passed away suddenly at her home Fri. Oct. 19th in South St. Paul, Minn.
 
Mrs. Andrew Bork, 79, Cornell, formerly of Gilman, died Tues., Oct. 23, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

Gilman – Congratulations to Bernie and Joleene Knox of Okinawa, who are rejoicing over their new baby daughter, Renee Deanne.
 
The Thorp High School Volleyball team went to Neillsville last Thurs. with determination and well honored skills and as a result, they came home with the overall Cloverbelt Conference Championship, and in the process kept a perfect season record in sterling condition.
 Army Master Sgt. Stanley R. Staszcuk has participated in the NATO- sponsored exercise, return of Forces to Germany ’88
