Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier  --   April 23, 2008

Do you recognize any of the seven young ladies pictured in this photograph taken in 1945, or know what they were getting together for? Let us know what you remember.

April 15th marked the 96th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The “unsinkable” White Star Line passenger vessel was on its maiden voyage from Liverpool, England to New York City when it struck an iceberg and sank early on April 15, 1912. More than 1500 people perished, while some 700 passengers in 19 lifeboats were rescued by the RMS Carpathia, whose radio operator copied the frantic distress call (the sill common “CQD” signal, possibly coupled with the then-new “SOS”) transmitted by MGY radio operator Jack Phillips as the Titanic foundered.

We received a call from Jenny Clerf who told us about her cousin, Lida Lillick, who was a survivor of the Titanic. Lida was 33 years old at the time. The neighbor that she gave a ticket to ended up not being able to go and gave the ticket to another neighbor. The neighbor who ended up going on the voyage did not survive, going down with the ship. Jenny said Lida resided in Stanley and lived to be in her 90’s. There was not a picture available of Lida.

Ed Nowicki called and shared information for the photo in Way Back When’s April 9th issue.

Ed is in the photo (1st boy in the second front pew on the left side; he is wearing a dark suit). He said the picture was taken during a confirmation class in May of 1959 at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church. The bishop who came from Chicago was Francis Rowinski, and the priest at that time was Pastor Leon Deobrzanski. Ed recalled and named two of the alter boys: Eugene Wittek and Rodney Nowak.
