Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier --  April 5, 2006

Ah yes, the streets of Thorp. We might think some of them are in “less than good” condition now, but just imagine what a walk to the grocery store would have been like back in the good ol’ days! Here we see “Main Street” in Thorp back when horses still had to pull their buggies through the dirt. A heavy rainfall and behold, wheels could get stuck up to their axles in goop!

Times sure have changed, and we often take our improvements for granted.

Can anyone place a date on this photograph? We can easily see that it’s of what is now North Washington Street, facing north. We bet many of you have heard stories about what our little community was like back before our streets were paved. Pass them on to us.

Last Week's Photo

Dick Rasmussen checked in last week to identify our Way Back When photograph from March 22 of the two little cherubs. He correctly named them as Karen and Don Ray Izydorek and said the photo was taken in 1941. According to Dick, Karen now resides in Chippewa Falls, celebrated her 65th birthday, is still working, and is a much-devoted grandmother. Don Izydorek is, of course, the retired proprietor of the Thorp Funeral Home and a well-known man about town.

Karen (Izydorek) Shalhoob, now of Chippewa Falls, dropped us a note to identify herself, adding that she is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her fourth great-grandbaby this May.
