Viola H. Johnson

Viola H. Johnson, 89, of 1450 W. Phillip St., Rhinelander, formerly of 711 E. First St., Merrill, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Josephine Haus in Rhinelander.

Viola was born Jan 3, 1918, in Wabeno, daughter of the late Gottlieb and Helga Helmerson Dreger. She married Clarence O. Johnson on Oct. 21, 1936, in Merrill. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1986.

Viola was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill, where she was involved in the Ladies Aid, Altar guild and Bible Study. Viola was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Irma. She enjoyed playing sheephead, visiting the ill and infirm, taking friends and acquaintances to their appointments and baking for others. Viola also loved to read her Bible.

Survivors include her daughter Janice (John) Eldredge, Eagle River; son Ronald (Kay), Marinette; grandchildren Carol Eldredge, Mary (Kirk) Eldredge-Thornton, Christine (Brad) Hopkins, Julie Johnson, Jeffrey Johnson, Shaun Johnson and Kevin (Sally) Johnson; and great-grandchildren Timothy and Micah Thornton and Kyle and Luke Johnson. Also surviving are brother Ralph (Rita) Dreger, Merrill; and sister-in-law Ruth Dreger, Merrill. She was preceded in death by sisters Charlotte Damon and Nola Duehring; and brothers Rheinhart, Harvey, Ray and Russell Dreger.

Funeral services were Monday, May 14, at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev. Kelly Leary officiated. Burial was in Chat Cemetery, town of Birch. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill.
