Katherine Stone Smith
Katherine Stone Smith, 90, of Merrill, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, at her residence.
Katherine was born Jan. 14, 1917, in Wausau, daughter of the late Benjamin D. and Margaret Bissell Stone Sr. She married David B. Smith on Aug. 29, 1936, in Wausau. He preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 1967. On Nov. 23, 1984, she married John R. Gilkey in Merrill. He preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 1988.
Kay graduated from Wausau High School and later from Bradford Junior College in Bradford, Mass. She served as a Girl Scout troop leader and on the Birch Trails Council. Kay was a guardian of Job's Daughters in Merrill, served on the board of Laird Youth Leadership Council, was a member of the Study Class, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum Board and Director Emeritus of Camp Manito-wish YMCA. Kay was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wausau. Through the David B. Smith and Katherine Stone Smith Foundation, she notably supported Camp Manito-wish YMCA, Smith Center at the MARC, T.B. Scott Library, Good Samaritan Hospital and other charities.
Survivors include her son David B. (Kathalyn) Smith Jr., Merrill; sons Margaret (Michael) Mumma, Jefferson, Iowa; and Sarah (Robert Bret) Miller, Wausau; daughter-in-law Anne Smith, Lakeside, Mont.; grandchildren Stephanie L. Smith, David B. (Gail) Smith III, Seth Andrew (Lori) Smith, Rebecca Smith (Adam) Gross, Renee S. Abeyta, Nicole A. (Jason Tondro) Freim, Katherine M. (David) Mikkelsen, Robert M. (fianc-e Marissa Ites) Mumma, Craig B. Miller and Margaret S. Miller; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Josephine Stone, Wausau; and Eugenia Haase, Schofield; and nieces and nephews. Kay leaves numerous other family members and friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husbands, David B. Smith and John R. Gilkey, son Thomas P. Smith, brother, Benjamin D. Stone Jr., and sister Barbara S. Craig.
Funeral services were Wednesday, June 13, at First Presbyterian Church, Wausau. Rev. Dr. Stephen Hamilton Wright officiated. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, served the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Camp Manito-wish YMCA, PO Box 246, Boulder Junction, WI 54512; MARC, 1100 Marc Dr., Merrill, WI 54452; or Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, 700 N. 12th St., Wausau, WI 54403.
