Edith L. Bondioli

Edith L. Bondioli, 97, of 1500 O'Day St., Merrill, formerly of the town of Rock Falls, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill.

Edith was born Dec. 13, 1909, in Toluca, Ill., daughter of the late Louis and Leonilda Manfredini Vignali. She married Steve Bondioli on June 29, 1935, in St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 1985. Steve preceded her in death in 1989.

As a young girl, Edith, along with her family, moved to the Schulz Spur area of Lincoln County where they began farming. Edith graduated from Merrill Senior High School in 1927. Her desire was to become a nurse, so she attended Evangelical Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Milwaukee and graduated in 1930. She returned to Merrill and practiced nursing at the former Lincoln County Home and was also employed at the former Holy Cross Hospital for many years. After retirement, Edith and Steve traveled to Italy to visit relatives, and they also took a trip to Hawaii. As a pastime, Edith loved to knit and crochet, making many gifts over the years. Edith and her husband enjoyed having a large garden. She was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Merrill, where she was a sacristan before her health prevented her from performing those duties. She also helped prepare and serve many funeral luncheons.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Edith was preceded in death by sister Anne Vignali Riley and brothers Angelo, Claude and Anthony.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 28, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. Rev. James Horath was the celebrant. Burial followed in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to Bell Tower Residence, St. Francis Catholic Church or Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
