Helen B. Schmidt

Helen B. Schmidt, 91, of Merrill, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at Good Samaritan Health Center in Merrill.

Born in the town of Corning on April 13, 1916, Helen was the daughter of the late Julius and Emma Pinnow Hahn. She married Lester Schmidt on Dec. 17, 1938, in Merrill. He preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 2000.

Helen had farmed with her husband in the town of Corning, worked in the cranberry marsh, at the Oconomowoc Cannery, Tiny Tot Factory, the former Badger Hotel in Merrill, and retired from Seeger's Dairy in Merrill. She was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ. Helen enjoyed crocheting afghans, reading, traveling, and especially spending time with her family.

She is survived by her daughters Nona (William) Zortman and Joan (Robert) Hartson, both of Merrill; grandchildren Kerry Zortman, Merrill; Amy (Scott) Tomczik, Wausau; and Rob (Chris) Hartson, Merrill; and great-grandchildren Michael Wiederhoeft, of the U.S. Navy; Eric M. Lokemoen, Wausau; and R.T. Hartson and Ellie Hartson, both of Merrill. Also surviving are brother Clarence Hahn, Merrill; sister-in-law Grace Prast, Merrill; and all her friends at Park Place. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester, a granddaughter, five sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Waid Funeral Home, Merrill. Rev. John Eldred will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight, Wednesday, between 4 and 8 p.m., and again on Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. to the hour of services.
